DD 5.1 on Sky Plus by Christmas !!!

clayts (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 24th July 2001, 00:39

This new Skyplus that`s coming out will have DD 5.1 support by Christmas, according to the excellent http://www.homecinemachoice.com

The new decoder has a built in hard-drive video recorder, as well as optical digital output.

The downside - £300 (and no concessions this time round) plus a tenner a month, plus £50 installation : and that`s if you`re an existing Sky punter.

Still, at least they`re making the right noises. Just a shame you have to pay htru the nose for the privilege.

Any inside info, Mr Ickle Yoda sir ?

Trusty Yoda here lol!

At the moment I have only the information that I have already posted here apart from a few little titbits that you have all maybe seen on other forums.

The actual boxes are small silver PACE ones which look slightly smaller than the existing ones. Also there is a possibility that if you already have sky then when you have Sky+ installed the digibox can be installed in another room allowing you to watch two different sky channels at once. However the downside of this is that there will be a charge for the second viewing card with £10 a month being the rumoured bill.

Other things you already know such as a future software upgrade on the box will allow two simultaneous recordings however this wont be available at launch. Life time subscriptions to the box have also not been confirmed. What is interesting however is when I was first told about Sky+ ( about 4 months ago ) we were told that customers will be able to download new films from the dish with a 2 hour film taking about 4 minutes! Similar to box office but with a much larger choice. However this aspect has not been mentioned anywhere within sky again but they did apply for a licence to allow some sort of transmission for this recently which they obtained. .

As always whenever I get anymore info on the box or when i finally get my demonstration and Q+A session of it at Sky all will be told!

At sky we all get sky for free with box office events as well. If you dont have sky then you also get it installed for free. When digital first came out at the full price employees also got it free so I am hoping that the same will happen with Sky+ however I doubt it will happen. Fingers crossed!

Adios!

Lee,just to clear something up for everyone who doesnt know about pro logic 2.
Pro logic 2,is developed as a `retro decode` system.Manufacturers cant ENCODE a soundtrack in dpl2,rather dpl2 DECODES a dolby pro logic soundtrack to make it sound like a 5.1 mix.
So in other words, dolby pro logic 2 can only work if the original format is stereo or dolby pro logic.Whilst similair to the non-enthusiast,real dolby 5.1 wipes the floor compared to dpl2 due to a lot of factors. The split suurounds are created at the encoding process, the lfe is encoded in the same way.Dynamic range is also limited on dpl2.
Despite these drawbacks,dpl2 is still a helluva lot of fun for your old video collection. Indiana Jones has become something of a demo for dpl2 in my house!
Dolby Pro logic 2 will only exist as something to turn those mediocre Pro Logic soundtracks into something us dvd owners are used to.
For now Dolby 5.1 rules the roost.

Marvellous
