There`s a little Irish bar about 80 yards North of the Flatiron Building, we loved having a bottle of wine, some munchies & watching everything happen around us! Grand Central Station, Statten Island ferry (use this, it`s free!) & Ground Zero is close to Battery Park where you get the ferry, trip to the top of The Empire State Bldg, get taxi`s everywhere, they`re dirt cheap & the scariest thing you`ll do! Horse & cab ride round Central Park, ice skating (if the time of years right), buy loads of electronic things at B & H, my Mrs loved Bloomingdales but thought Maceys was a bit poor. China town was fantastic, a helicopter ride over Manhatten would be great I imagine, (Bush was in town when we went & the security guys made it a no fly zone!) was gutted not to have done this. You can get powerboat rides around Manhatten as well as doubledecker tours. Food wise, I think you`ll be hard pushed to have a bad meal, there`s some real trendy eateries in "The Village" but our favourite was a place on Times Square that had singing Italian waiters n` stuff...f a n t a s t i c food too! There`s a book called something like "The English Travellers Guide to New York" or something that we found invaluable & it was full of vouchers, I`ll try & dig it out later...the people are great too as are the cops who really go out of their way to help you. Man I`m jealous...have a great time!
(edit...who`s the wierd looking Nokia dude over there!? ---------->>>>>>>

You`ve got to do the City Tour Bus Multipass. They`re not like the crap you get in London - they actually have some interesting characters who give you the tour of the City and you can jump off and on as you please. Costs $50 which includes all 3 loops of New York which are Upper Manhattan (inc Central Park, Harlem, Empire State, Chrysler, United Nations etc.), Lower Manhattan (most of the sights, easy access to Ground Zero, Battery Park, Ferries, China Town, Italian Quarter) and Brooklyn which has some interesting sights. You also get the Night Tour for the money which is excellent because they take you over the Brooklyn Bridge and onto the Brooklyn Docks for that magnificaent view of the city you see in films.

Empire State - but don`t waste your money on the skyride/simulator thingy, it`s pretty poor and lasts no longer than 3 or 4 minutes.

Got to go to Grand Central Station just to see how huge the place is, couldn`t find those steps from The Untouchables when I was there unfortunately!

Staten Island Free Ferry which passes right by the Statue of Liberty.

Ground Zero

If you want to buy DVD`s, Music etc. I`d avoid Virgin on Times Square and look for Tower Records. Can`t remember where they all were but there`s definetly one on the lower floor of Trump Tower which is worth going into just to see the 200ft indoor waterfall, + if you`re a fan of The Apprentice you have to go!

Be sure to hang around Central park after dark to see the real character of New York come to the fore...

My sister insisted we eat around fisherman`s warf (I think it was called). Someone will correct me if I`m wrong but it`s the place with the `Big Apples` all decorated. There was a free bus to and from where the ferries dock for Liberty Island (I think only locals know about this bus but anyone can use it - just ask a New Yorker.
Reasonable meals and loads of places to choose from to eat.
We only went on a day trip on the train from Connecticut so didn`t have much time. Did the usual, Empire State, Boat trip, Rockafella Center (well, walked past it) & Ground Zero.
Buy Tickets for The Empire State Building on-line before you go and you won`t have to queue. Can`t remember if they were cheaper or not. My brother-in-law just printed off the tickets and we didn`t have to wait to buy them.

Go to the Marriot Marquis Hotel on Times Square

Th etop floor (65 storeys) has a rotating restaurant - you can have ala carte (not cheap) or all you can eat buffet for $20 (but still classy nonetheless) and its good food

If you go at night you will get the most fantastic views of New York - deffo well worth it.
