Meeting Intermawebby people!
Just met the first ever person I chat to on the intermaweb in real life and I have to say, I`m seriously disappointed!
I know people tend to be different online a bit to in person, like shy people can be more forthcoming and non-shy people sometimes go shy and whatever, but how on earth can someone be perfectly nice and normal on the web, then be super scary when you meet them in person?!?!?!?!?
Fortunatly, I had followed everyone`s advice and taken a bunch of mates with me and met in a public place (went to bluewater and lakeside for the day...took us an hour and 3 quarters to get there...3 and a half to get back...guess who got losted!)...Both very good pieces of advice coz I suspect he may well have been an axe murderer in a very flimsy disguise!
Anyone else had any interesting experiences?

I went to Vancouver to meet my internet friend and we had a great time. But we had been chatting for about 4 years and know EVERYTHING about each other. She really is my best friend in the whole wide world.
RE: Meeting Intermawebby people!
Only negative experience I`ve had has been that when me and a friend finally met (after about 4 years of emailing back and forth) it felt like we didn`t have anything to talk about at first, but then it just felt like we always hung out.
4 more years down the line we don`t talk much just cos of naturally moving on.
I still have lots of Internet friends I want to meet though, I haven`t been put off.
The Weekend Web on SomethingAwful.com the other week made for scary, depressing and cautionary reading.

^ From those leaked AOL search logs, I giggled because I`m a bad person...
Also the full logs seem to show her husband is thinking of rekindling an affair! :O

I was really into meeting people from the net when I was 15. Totally lied about my age :( . Should really be grateful that I am still alive looking back. I went all the way to London one day (from the midlands) to meet two 20 year old males (never told anyone - apart from best mate) - crazy and lucky I am still alive looking back - but they were great people, and not nutters.
I have never had any bad experiences and met some incredible people who I would never have bumped in to in real life and some of these people have had a dramatic influence on the way I lead my life today.
All my 'NORMAL' friends think I am strange (total nerd) for meeting people off the net but I don't see the problem. More chance you are going to bump into a nutter in a night club than on line IMO. I don't really meet people of the net anymore mainly because of the horror stories you hear and my mates telling me it's weird :)
Omg - just read what I am about to post and it does sound so geeky and strange when I type it out loud ..hehe, ah well :) .

Good thread. Don`t think I have seen this one before.
I chatted with someone from Athens for about a year, daily, on IRC and seemed to get very close, knowing one hell of a lot about each other. We never invented an Internet" persona", always honest.
I went to meet him in Athens (silly me didn`t tell anyone!) and we got on as well as I had expected and hoped. That is, very well.
Since then, ten years later we are still chatting on the net via webcam. I probably "speak" (forget Skype) to him more than anyone I know. I have been to Athens since and we are even closer. I would say we love each other very much, platonically, and I trust him completely. It has been the best part of my experience on the Net.
I also now have a pemanent "home" in Athens. His apartment. :)
He is also the best laugh I ever have.

I have met lots of ppl of the net good and bad but my best experience happened recently, met a amazing woman and we get on so well the only proble is the 400ml round trip I have to make to see her but she is more than worth it :D
Best thing that happened to me in years.

RE: Meeting Intermawebby people!
So far I have only met one person I got to know on the interweb, and that was a great success. I am 40, he`s in his 50`s and we are both happily married. No funny stuff, just a really good friendship. We live 80 odd miles apart, so we have only met up twice, but we regular ring each other (moved on from messenger chat now) and he is probably now my best friend!
On the other hand, last year one of the guys on another forum I frequent developed an unhealthy obsession with me and kept bombarding me with messages every time I went online. In the end, I had him thrown off the forum, and had to block him via email and messenger. It was a nightmare! So glad he`s in the States, and not over here. I have to avoid the forums he uses though, and he even changed his email addy and tried to get back in contact with me just last week, so I`ve had to block that address as well now! Argh!
I know there`s a lot of really nice genuine people online, but you have to be careful!
