Looking for a new car - help me with options!

timechaser (Elite) posted this on Monday, 18th September 2006, 11:01

Should tick as many as possible out of these boxes. Will be 2nd hand purchase, about 2002 02 plate or newer and should be less than £40K

1. Good handling/ride
2. Powerful (my current ride is 240bhp with 0-62 of 6.1 seconds. Better or equal)
3. Convertible
4. 5 seats
5. Good boot size.

Am NOT willing to buy a 4x4 :) the convertible is the first one I would relax.

Thanks for the help.

If you can spend up to 40K does it really need to be second hand??

Buy the top gear espace convertible, add nitrous. Bound to meet all the requirements and with 2 extra places so even more people can share the experience! :D

You`re killing the planet and your children (if you have any) DON`T DO IT.....!!! - Really? So you are telling me I am causing more pollution from my car which conforms to Euro4 norms compared to the zillions of old gits driving around in 10 year old diesel cars?

Fowler - second hand as I cannot bear the thought of depreciation again! ;) Anyhow, the cars I am looking at are well over £60K new, so second hand is the rule. Current favorite is the BMW M5 but thats over the budget or the Mercedes E55 AMG.

The RS4/M3 are sadly not 5 seater - and honestly, would be a step down from my current car ;) so no can do there. Both do come in convertible form though.

Espace - I will avoid profanities, and the use of several words referring to a horse`s anatomy and just say - no thanks. Nitrous is usable only in engines which can stand it, and would need to be rebored anyway. That being said, ever seen a hippo waddle? Looks more graceful than an espace taking a turn at 60.

Thanks for the input (and the slurs :P). Any constructive comments mucho appreciated.

As in the one reviewed on top gear which has 11 gear box settings?? they didnt like that and it took hammond an absolute age to get it set up to give out the full 512 (ish I think) BHP

As for the second hand thing, I pretty much knew why that was the chosen stipulation.Dont know why I asked, i guess what i should have asked is would you even consider a new car if it was meeting your criteria (other than the 2nd hand bit of it)

A few years back if i had had £40k to look for a car id have bought a Noble - new - but then it wouldnt meet all your criteria and the new noble is (i think) £75k
