Poledancing - Am I being prudish, or not?

sabbra (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Tuesday, 5th December 2006, 16:30

The current edition of TV Choice magazine has a christmas catalogue from Additions Direct which features the following item in the children`s toys section:

Quote:
Peekaboo pole dancing kit: 3-piece chrome-plated pole dancing kit [with] dance guide, instructional DVD, Peekaboo garter and dance dollars.

The picture features a young girl (looks mid-teens) in hot-pants and t-shirt, with one leg over the pole [sic], wearing the included peekaboo garter, stuffed with the included "dance dollars".

Now, is it just me, or is this not just a bit sick?
Will anyone be buying one for their daughter, niece, of friend`s daughter this Christmas?

(Blurb on the back page says that Additons Direct is a trading division of Littlewoods Shop Direct Home Shopping Ltd, Liverpool, L70 IAB).

Tesco got in a bit of fuss for this. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=412195&in_page_id=17
I now see on thier web site it says it is for adults only.

No, I don`t think you`re being prudish at all.

The sexualisation of children and early teens, often for commercial gain - with the high street being as guilty as anyone - is one of the main problems with 21st century Britain. It`s downright creepy as well... :(

On a similar theme, is it only me who thinks it`s sick that all today`s young girls want to wear the Playboy emblem on watches/jewelery/clothes etc?

Playboy = bunny girls = sexual exploitation, surely? And the whole package is aimed at under 15s. :/

No, my gf isn`t prudish at all, but just the other day we were going past a shop, and she said how weird it seemed to have playboy merchandise aimed at girls in the shop window.

maybe the idea is that by women wearing the symbol, it`s bringing power to women, by them err um, guess I don`t have a career in marketing ahead ;)

And yeh, the poledancing for kids thing is very odd.

Im no prude at all but seeing this pole dancing kit for kids is just so wrong! We live in a strange society.....everything and everyone has to adhere to `political correctness` but it`s deemed ok for leading supermarkets to stock these `peado fantasies`!! >:(

Ahh now this is what Christmas is all about. Young children dancing provocatively around a pole whilst mum and dad put fake money in her garter belt and mutter comments like "mmmm lovely"

I personally can`t help but think about those chefs who claim they got the bug when they got their first Fisher Price toy oven at Xmas...

I have an adult online store and first saw this type of pole a couple of years ago. They were at that time aimed toward the adult market.
The idea of a child pole dancing is disturbing enough, but to add the garter and toy money just makes this item one of the sickest products to be mass marketed that I have heard of.

Credo!
