DVD player hacked for russian DVD

vera (Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 22nd February 2001, 10:12

Can anybody tell me whether it is possible (and how) to use DVD films from Russia (in Russian language) on a Panasonic DVD bought in Italy.
I didn`t choose a model of Panasonic player yet, but I think it will be the latest one.
I understand nothing in all this stuff, so please use very simple expressions :-)) For instance, what does "to be chipped" means?
Thank you!
Vera

Vera,

OK I`ll try and talk none techie....

How to use DVD films from Russia......
This depends on the region coding on the disk, region coding is how the film manufacturers split the world up. The USA is Region 1, Europe is Region 2, Asia is region 3 and Australia is Region 4. Now DVD Players are set to play DVD disks within the region they are sold therefore if you buy a player in Italy it will be Region 2 therefore only DVD disk with number 2 on the back of the sleeve will play on this machine. If the disk from Russia has a number 2 on the back it will play on this machine, if it has any other then it won`t unless it`s chipped, which leads me onto the next question.

what does "to be chipped" means ?

So you have your DVD player which can only play Region 2 disks, if you chip the player it means you can then purchase and play disks from the US or Asia (the difference being that they perhaps do not have too many cut scenes like the region 2 disk does) Chipping can mean replacing the original chip in the player to make it mulit region.

Hope this has explined a few things, just read some of the threads on here to get an idea of Region coding, hacking, chipping and mulit region.

Hope this has helped a little

Disks from Russia is either region 5 or 0 (pirate ones).

Vera, you should buy a remotely hackable player, for example any Philips model (dvd711, etc). There are some inexpencive ones but quality is very good. Check this site for the list of remotely hackable players (http://www.dvd.reviewer.co.uk/info/multiregion/). Panasonic cannot be modified by a remote, they have to be chipped.

For Vern: "to be chipped" means to inject chip into the player.

Is that not that same as replacing the chip, what do you mean by the term `injecting` ?

Perhaps if you chose to have your player made Multiregion; this would solve this problem. I`m sorry if this sounds obvious but I do not know from which counrty you come from.
