Choosing new TV, 100hz disappointing, is 50hz the way to go?
Hi again,
Getting to the short list of new widescreen TVs, really fancied a sony kv-28fx66 with is a 100hz, however had a demo of another 100hz tv showing `the mummy returns` and found that when the characters were moving (on some sort of flying ship!) I could see shadowing around their heads, otherwise the picture looked pretty good.
Further investigation has lead me to believe that this is a common problem on all 100hz tellys, although only visible if you look for it so a standard 50hz might be back on the cards, just need to find a damn stand.
Does anybody have experiences of 100hz, comments etc.
Many thanks
Adam.

I have a Sony 100Hz 32" jobbie... God knows what model I have never been much of a code lover ! But I think that its great, although I have never noticed a shadowing problem, maybe when I go home and look tonight I will be able to see it :/
Great TV and I love it !
Tim

sony tv`s (mine included) have an "svm" circuit. This sort of increases the sharpness which makes lines and halos and things around objects. putting the tv into movie mode disables the svm circuit. svm is great on bad video tapes and broadcasts but not great on perfect pictures (dvd, ps2 etc)

My advice is believe your own eyes - you`d say go for 100hz if you`d paid all that extra.
View both then decide, my own view is that 50hz is better.
Ever heard the story of the Kings invisible clothes!!
Ignore everyone`s opinion (yes, even mine) - yours counts.

I have an older 50HZ sony 32" - and a friend came around last night and couldn`t believe it looked sharper than his more recent 100HZ sony of the same size.
But as mentioned - buy what YOU like.
I bought mine 6 years ago and am still totally pleased with it - and thats how a £1200 TV should be,

100hz versus 50 hz is a very subjective argument. My opinion is that in a small room with anything up to 36" screen ,50hz is better. But some people are not bothered by picture smearing, plastic faces or artificial looking pictures. They are happy to have 100hz as its the latest technology. But on a big screen when you are a good distance away, you will not notice these faults. As someone said, look at the two, side by side, and you will know which you prefer. The simple fact that new tv`s contain even more tricks to stop 100hz problems shows that its not all its cracked up to be.So unless you have a massive screen in a big room, stick to 50hz.

I recently tried out a JVC 100mhz - I forget the model but it uses 4 different picture enhancing systems - produces a pretty good picture but somehow this manages to look fake! The imaging is partly digital artefact, true, but I think that it is the very clarity of the picture that removes the `cinematic` feel of filmed shows and gives them a `videod` feel, rather like watching live coverage. The family didn`t like it and we got a cheaper 50mhz set.

I recently faced the same problem you have. Money to spend on a new TV, but unsure of 100 or 50hz.
After mucho standing around in my local Comet staring at pictures I decided on 50hz.
100hz looked `fuzzy` to me and gave a strange sensation when watching fast moving images.Didn`t seem to matter which make I watched.Even the wife, who gives little opinion on these matters, remarked on the strange quality of 100hz pictures.
I don`t regret buying 50hz.

Here`s my 2p worth.
I bought a 32" 50Hz about 4 years ago( a Thomson) at an exceptional price - it was a managers special. I felt it was pretty good at the time and fine for my Wharfedale DVD player.
Last year I bought a Tosh SD-420 player and a 32ZD26P telly (which is 100Hz). They are linked via component cables. I had reservations about 100Hz pictures looking smeared and unrealistic too, but I have to say that the Tosh set-up is absolutely fantastic. The picture seems to combine the benefits of both 50Hz and 100Hz. No smearing whatsoever and extremely lifelike pictures. There is no problem with fast moving pictures either, even with all the additional image processing options switched off. I still have the Thomson telly in a different room in the house so it`s relatively easy to compare. The Tosh wins hands down, no contest.
As a previous poster said, let your eyes be the judge. I would though highly recommend having a demo of the Tosh. If you decide to buy, you can get it on-line for about £900. It usually retails in the High St. for about £1200.
Cheers.
