Wharfedale Players - do they work with recordable DVDs?
I have a wharfedale 750s and M5.
Does anyone know if these work with the various formats of recordable DVDs?
I don`t have access to any to try.
I am thinking of putting my home videos onto DVD, but obviously not much good if these players will not play them!!

My brother bought the M3 last week, and his plays most recorded DVD discs - I think the circuits inside are similar to the 750.

The circuits in the M3 and 750 couldn`t be more different if you tried, as they are manufactured by completely different companies.
As fas as the M3 goes there won`t be any problem. As far as the M5 and 750 goes, it`ll be hit and miss as both are players built around 1999-2001, which is when a lot of the budget players were fitted with only second-generation loaders, not necessarily capable of handling the newer recordable formats.
There have been some successes with older, Taiwan-built Sampo players (of which the M5 is one). However, it is possible to swap out the loader in an M5 (assuming it`s one of the older models) and replace it, as Sampo used standard Afreey DVD-ROM loaders (the newer M5s used a different type of loader, although still IDE). Many Sampo owners have swapped these out and replaced with DVD-ROM drives which can handle the new recordable formats (eg Liteon springs to mind) - see here
As for the 750, some folk have reported success with DVD-R, but a lot depends on which method you use to burn the discs (I`ve heard that the 750 seems to compatible with Panasonic recorded DVD-R media), but this player really is long in the tooth so don`t expect miracles.
So, to answer your question, the answer is a resounding "maybe" I`m afraid...

Hi
I have a Wharfedale M5 ver 1.7 & Panasonic E50 recorder. I`ve found that it is a bit hit and miss as far as the M5 goes with DVD-R`s. It will NOT play Panasonic,Maxell or Memorex discs, however it WILL play e-proformance discs recorded on the E50, however it will freeze if you try and fast forward it more than x2. As a matter of interest the e-proformance dics are made in Taiwan, whether this has anything to do with it I don`t no.

I have found that DVD+R discs do not play on most Wharfedale machines
