Best Surround Speakers out of these two.....

skirpy (Elite) posted this on Friday, 15th August 2003, 23:07

Hello, i am thinking of upgrading my surround setup, i currently own this setup and am quite happy with it and it has had good reviews, but it is a bit old now.

I am thinking of going for this set here

Do you think i will see a big difference on this model or is there something else i should be looking at.

Thanks for any advice.

Skirpy

For music and movies the new Mission M3 series are fantastic stuff, these are superb value and sound brilliant with anything.

Add a sub such as the Rel Quake, MJ Acoustics Pro 50 or a Velodyne and you`re laughing. Be aware though that Uncle Eric has pulled out of the AV Forums powerbuys so a Velodyne may be hard to source on the web.

Aletrnatively the Wharfedale Diamond pack is stunning value for money and a timeless package indeed. Buy the Diamond 8.3`s and the Diamond centre and add some Mission bipoles on the surround channels for surround excellence.

Or for the most fun, go for the Acoustic Energy Evo 3`s, Evo Centre and Mission bipoles and prepare to be stunned. Astonishing sound quality and capable of volumes and composure you thought was the provision of the £1000 brigade.

Don`t make a decision without listening to KEF`s new KHT2005.2 set.

They are very exciting and involving to listen to.

The KEF`s look very nice and modern, but can a couple of front Satellite speakers compare to a couple of good big floor standing speakers for sound quality.

My previous two Satellite sets did`nt sound as rich as my floor standing speakers, although they were not the best out there.

Well the plain and simple answer is no.

I have had KEF floorstanders before and they were awesome.

At the moment I have a pair of Mirage OM9`s which are also outstanding (although home improvements are forcing me to put these up for sale).

But the KEF KHT`s Mark 2, have surprised me and I must say the detail is superb, the sub integration is also spot on, but the honest answer is the depth and smoothness of them is not up to floorstander level.

I may well put the OM9`s in the new trading section, though not sure what to ask.

The Kef KHT 2005.2 is excellent - I have that in the lounge and the smaller KHT 1005 in the bedroom!! :)

I have the KHT2005.2 in my lounge and I agree it is superb.

Two questions;

1. When I wall mounted two speakers, the one that I had really tight to the wall, the ball bracket was so loose that it would not hold the weight of the speaker. I swapped it with another in the set and it is OK. Did you have anything like that?

2. I too was considering the new 1005 for the bedroom. In your view, how does it compare to the 2005.2 in terms of sound repro, subwoofer integration, dramatic punch?

Thanks

The 1005 is a `diet` version of the 2005, but with a 100w sub instead of a 200 in the 2005 - there`s really not that much difference, it`s still the same superb Kef gear!!`
