unplayable dvds and cds

geoff g. (Competent) posted this on Saturday, 24th January 2004, 17:13

my son bought the underworld dvd region 1 and it would not play on our dvd player elta 8882 others played ok, then we tried it in my pc and my optorite multi burner still no luck so we tried a few more nothing. on the back was a copy protected warning.
some of his mates have bought dvds which won`t play. and also cds
my point is that most of the retailers will not exchange or refund a dvd or cd which has been opened. this is happening more and more.
so, how do you check that the dvd or cd will play on your system without removing the wrapping, maybe some one has a magic wand and that might do it. otherwise you are stuck with something that doesn`t work

the only answer is to learn from experience....if your player doesn`t like a particular flavour of copy protection, then don`t buy any disks with it on. If in doubt just leave it.

Could it be an RCE problem?

I`m sure Underworld R1 is a Sony release (R2 is EiV) and most Sony DVDs have RCE protection.

RCE will not stop a disc from playing altogether. It should display the world map telling you about your multiregion player. But it IS an RCE title.Sounds like your friends may buy pirated dvd`s and cd`s,and a lot of early or cheap players do not like recordable discs of any flavour.

it was a region 1 dvd. our dvd players can play all regions and rce encoded disc`s that is the first i checked my sons dvd rewriter nec 1300a has been up-graded to play all discs.
their is a test case going through the courts at the moment about the problem of unplayed disc`s which have copy protection on them it is in denmark or sweden.
so it is a probem with the copy protection as the disc is not a copy it was bought from cdwow and every other disc we bouht has ok..
we need to find out how we stand about returning faulty dvd`s or cd`s

CDWOW will no doubt take it back if you contact them & explain...they have been good with me when I`ve had problems with CD`s & DVD`s & sent me prepaid jiffy bags to return them without question.

I have never yet encountered a dvd that refuses to play because of copy protection. This is borne out by the fact that no discs contain CP.Macrovision and CGMS are part of all dvd players, not discs, and the disc simply contains an instruction to tell the player to output Macro/CGMS on playback. So if it is a CP fault, its nothing to do with the disc.

Not to forget CSS! But all licensed DVD players and DVD-ROMs sould be able to play CSS encrypted DVDs. I guess unless there was a problem with the decryption key on the disk (maybe due to faulty manufacture??), CSS sould not course any problems with playback. But this would be unusal.

A badly pressed DVD disk might also contain errors which courses playback problems.

However, faulty DVDs should be sent/taken back to the place of purchase for a replacement or refund.
