HDD OR NOT HDD..THAT IS THE QUESTION!

Carffion (Competent) posted this on Monday, 23rd February 2004, 22:44

Do I go for the Panasonic DMR E-100 at £750 and stick with my old Digibox or upgrade my Digibox to Sky+ and go for a vanilla DVD recorder?
I am a past victim of the dreaded Philips DVDR70 and still receiving therapy!

Thanks for your reply mate! Should I go for the HS2 or upgrade to the new 100? I`d use a HDD machine to replace VHS and record a lot of music programmes (Proms etc).I did have a Philips DVDR70 but I`ve ditched it as I`ve had the same problems as everyone else! On the Philips,I used the 2 hour recording mode.

I was faced with pretty much the same decision HDD or Sky+. I am now the VERY proud owner of the Panasonic HS2 HDD DVD recorder. Decided this route mainly so I could archive recorded programmes I wanted to keep and the firewire input to record from my camcorder. Also a little fed up with lining Mr Sky`s pockets again. Ok so you can watch and record 2 different sky channels at the same time. Only so much time to view recorded material though eh!!!! :/

To be honest the HSR-52 is more than adequet, as you`d be hard pushed to fill the 40hrs anyway, plus you`d be able to find one for a great deal on the net, so unless you`ve loads of dosh get the 52, only diff i see with the 100 is bigger HD and some more mem card slots(which i`ve never used)

That does it!

My 3 day old Philips DVDR70 with its first fault is going straight back to the shop. I think I`ll buy a VCR and in a coupla years when the DVD technology has settled down think about switching again...

I couldn`t go back to watching stuff off VHS now...Sky + box, Pace HDD twin view are and a couple of DVD recorders have consigned all my VCR`s to the great electrical scrapheap in the sky (i.e. the loft!!)...even the lowest settings on the DVD recorders beats the best recordings you can make on a VHS..

Carffion, you have been ripped off.The HS2 is well out of date and should cost nowhere near £499.New HDD machines all have high speed transfer to dvd, larger HDD and are available from under £400.The new Toshiba can be bought for this price, and even Pioneer recorders are cheaper than £499.
But its too late now. However,I would also get a Sky+ as it has many functions that no HDD/DVDR combo offers.Like watch and record 2 satellite channels, record 2 simultaneously, and Sky+ does not record the red dot that will blight all your recordings from standard digibox to HDD.
