This player has started "acting up" it only plays the odd rental one or two new dvd`s. It wont play any dvd-r + or -, or imports at all. It does play all vcd`s. Has anyone encountered similar problems or can suggest whats gone wrong. This is only a recent problem. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Cheers, Ian

Unfortunately all too common...check out the discussion forum here:

I had an R890 that started doing the `no disc` trick earlier this year. Unfortunately the Philips 880/890 machines seemed to have a basic design problem, and there are legions of people having returned them.
Its hard to believe there are still people out there with working 880`s.These dreadful machines normally don`t last long. But Philips have extended the warranty to 2 years so if your retailer can`t help, contact Philips via their website and they will assist with the repair.A cd firmware update will only delay the inevitable

Yup, I still have a working DVDR880 which has had a few problems and has being back to Philips once, but was returned a week later because there wasen`t much of a fault discription and they said they cuoldn`t do anything with it. However I guess they must have done something to it as it`s worked fine ever since and the casing looks like it had being taken off as just at one side, its not pussed in far enough!
My recorder gets ALOT of heavy usage, I have the timer set to record progammes nearly every day and haven`t had any problems since it came back. :) :) touch wood!

I`ve a working 880 and I`ve always been very happy with it. It went off for a refit a while back but (touchwood) it`s been fine ever since.

I still have my DVDR880, and is still working fine even though it has been repaired twice.
From what I have heard the newer models don`t have such good sound quality which is important to me, as I also use it as a main CD player with my HIFI.
RE: Problems with Phillips DVDR 880
I should have been clearer:I meant to say any 880 machines still working that have not been in for service work.I`m sure there are plenty out there that are working, but I think 99.9% of them will have been in for the inevitable repair
RE: Problems with Phillips DVDR 880
Granted. I`d be surprised (flabbergasted) to find an 880 that`s never had trouble, but that`s what you get for being an early adopter. True the Philips range have had more problems than other manufacturers, but they`re good machines that do what they`re supposed to and a lot of people who`ve got `em like `em. Cut us a bit of slack, Phelings ;)

Having been an unfortunate 880 owner for over a year,I now disregard the reliability problems on those, but having moved onto a HDD/RAM/-R machine then finally to a -RW/-R/HDD,I likie to let people know how basic DVD+ is compared to the other formats. It does what it claims, but -RW does too,and for almost the same price ,and lots more aswell.Having used all the formats I can see no reason for DVD+ to be the format of choice for anyone. All it claims to do can also be performed by the official formats ,so why go for cheap tacky Far Eastern imports when quality is a few pounds away.
RE: Problems with Phillips DVDR 880
I agree with your points about better machines with higher specs, but from a personal standpoint I`ve never had the option to go for a Panny with a HDD - buying the Philips maxed me out and quite apart from that there`s the question of media. My PC and the Philips use + discs and I don`t want to get into using more than one format of media.
