i have been offered a toshiba satellite 2610 laptop without a serial number on the rear. Is there anywhere else i might be able to find a serial number on or inside

Usually S/N are on the bottom of laptops, you may get lucky if the S/N is programmed into the motherboard , you will prob require some form of maintence disk to read it though.

If it`s still the original OS install you might get it in the system info on the general tab.

Go into the BIOS. A lot of laptops have them in there too.
