What TV?

RichR (Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 7th September 2000, 14:16

Hi all,
About 6 months ago I bought a Toshiba SD-3109 player and have it wired through a Pro-logic Technics stereo system, using the 5.1 channel inputs for full full Dolby Digital - and I`m really pleased with the performance so far. My problem is the quality of my TV - a ropey old bog-standard 25" Goodmans job, which I`m desperate to upgrade. Anyone have any suggestions for a TV with the performance to match the DVD player - I`m looking at anything between £700 and £1500 realistically....
I need advice soon, as I keep blowing the money I`m trying to save for the TV on new discs!

Everyone will respond with different recommendations, and the best advice is to go and look at TVs in shops and see which ones you like best. You obviously don`t need TVs with in-built sound systems, so keep away from those. In my opinion a Sony widescreen TV is a safe bet e.g. these 32" models:-

Sony KV32-FX20 (around 900 pounds, 50Hz)
Sony KV32-DX20 (around 1000 pounds, 50Hz, with built-in digital tuner)
Sony KV32-FX60 (around 1100 pounds, 100Hz)

Buying tip - find the cheapest price on-line and take this to John Lewis who will price match and throw in a 5 year guarantee. And they do interest free credit offers as well I believe.

I`ve just bought an ex-display Toshiba 32WD98B from John Lewis for £960, with a 5 year guarantee. I bought for the picture not the Dolby Digital sound as I already had a Sony 930 amp. So far i`ve been very pleased with it.

Reviews can help you narrow down the choice but at the end of the day your the one who has to live with it so make sure you audition the tv`s that interested you. Also play around with the settings because some of tv`s are really badly set up and changing this can make a huge difference (i`ve yet to go into a shop and see the Toshiba set up properly).

The other tv`s that caught my eye were the Panasonic`s the main problem for me was that they only had 2 scarts.

I was told that John Lewis didn`t match internet prices but then again they weren`t that much more and plus the 5 year guarantee more then made up the difference, still a lot cheaper than Dixon`s, Curreys etc... I don`t think they do interest free cedit though but their interset rate is very very good.

Hope this helps

Well John Lewis in Nottingham (Jessops) definitely match internet prices as that`s where I got my TV from.

Well, I`ve recently bought a Sony KV32-FX20 and the picture quality through both my DVD and Sky Digital is superb.

In fact, better than both of the 100hz 32" sets that I had beforehand - a Philips and Panasonic.

Comet do it for just over £900 INCLUDING the stand.
