Page 1 of Confusion about Daewoo DHC 2200K

I hope that somebody can help clear up some confusion about this player.

I bought one nearly a month ago to try it out, but had problems including interference on the picture with the digital outputs turned on, and refusal to play some discs.

The player was exchanged and works perfectly except that it will not switch my TV into RGB mode (I cannot manually select RGB on my TV, it needs the blanking signal) and pixellation on dark images.

My confusion arises beacuse the Scan player also had these problems and others, which have now allegedly been ironed out, so am I right in thinking that the Daewoo player is the same as the Scan with all the problems fixed, or would the Scan firmware upgrade sort out the RGB and pixellation?

I`m not too bothered about the RGB but the pixellation is annoying. If it is just that it is a cheap player then OK, but if it can be sorted I would like to know how to go about it.

Forgot to say that the player does not default to subtitles on, and that the region code and Macrovision can still be disabled.

Regarding the daewoo you have an earlier batch.We had these very
problems with the sc-2000 on one particular batch.On the new sc-2000
rgb,subtitles,etc have been sorted out.Even pixellation has been reduced.
Unfortunatly we cannot provide you with a firmware upgrade for free.Or what i can do is if you call me on 01204-474702 i can send you a set
but you will have to pay the postage ie £3.Im not sure the firmware fixes
the rgb though but its worth a try.

Cheers for the info Nilesh, sound like it`s worth having a go even if it doesn`t sort out all the problems.

Call me thick but I haven`t got a clue what your talking about, what`s the RGB problem. I do know what pixellation is but as I haven`t seen any other DVD players I wouldn`t know if the Daewoo I just bought has it or not.

The RGB was very washed out, and some people had problems getting it to output through the TV automatically

Got the same problem with the audio outputs, if set to Bitstream the video judders, set to PCM or OFF and it`s fine. The main thing is the poor picture quality, it appears that the colour depth of the player is too low, like it`s only 16-bit and not 24-bit. I my friend has a Wharfedale and it`s by far superior, none of that awful banding on the walls in the background etc. I get the same effect on my PC if the display is set to 16-Bit colour, but disappears when set to 24-Bit(16 Million Colours) or above! I believe simply that the unit can only render in 16-Bit(65535 Colours) hence the poor quality, lack of colour depth will cause banding. I`m going to return mine to Argos and look for something else, Region free/Macrovision or not. I want the quality not just the features! Shame the Wharfedale is not Silver.

I can confirm Loz`s accounts about the Daewoo - Poor colour resoloution, pixellating video, and juddery video. However, as regards the RGB problem, I found that the video setup menu is wrong. When you select composite, the player actually outputs RGB, and when you select RGB, it`s composite video out through the scart! This was checked by removing the red signal pin from the scart cable, and switching between the modes.

It`s a shame really, as the daewoo/scan players are pretty well specified, but they just don`t cut the mustard. Argos refunded me with no problems, and even offered me a manager`s special of a pioneer dv525 for 150 quid.

Perhaps I`ll look into that if the wharfedale that I`ve ordered is not up to scratch...
