looking for my first DVD player

sjf (Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 14th September 2000, 22:02

Hope you can help me out there ?
I am looking to buy my first dvd and want a muilti region one (US & UK).
(I do not have buckets of money) I have £200 so I have put it down to three.
1. Alba DVD103 (argos)
2. Bush DVD 2006 (not sure if this can be muilti-region) (argos)
3. Daewoo DQD200 (not sure if this can be muilti-region) (argos)
4. Whalfdale 750 (tesco)
If anyone can tell which one is the best from above or know of any better one`s please let me know.
I do not want to chip it.

Sorry I`ve not replied earlier - just got on the Net yesterday.

I would say that out of the four the Wharfedale is your best bet - most mags have given it good ratings and it has DD and DTS output.

Having said that DVD technology changes rapidly and prices plummit.

It is envisaged there should be a £100 player available by Xmas tho` what this`ll be like...

I`ve got an Encore DV450 (howls of derision all round) but aside from a slight problem when I first got it (and which Encore fixed and returned with a free DVD within a week) and it has served me well - anyone else totally pleased with the 450 ?

Your other bet is to read the Total DVD shootout thread below - the Yelo 800DVD is the current flavour of the month...a bit like mine was when it first surfaced !

I`m happy with my just received Encore 450 (I`ve only played region 2`s sofar) apart from I can not get my region bypass code to work. Am I correct when using Menu 8,3,3,3,8 ?

I was told that this should be multi-region enabled.

Nearly right - it`s 3,8,8,8,3 !!!

Correct procedure :
POWER on
Press STOP on the remote
Press SETUP on the remote
Press 3,8,8,8,3 on the remote and up pops the loopholes menu where you can specify a certain region, or select bypass (i.e. it plays everything)

Did you get one of the funky new silver ones ?

Clayts is right. Out of your list, the Wharfie would probably be the best choice, but have a look at the Lecson as well if you have a Debenhams with a Media & Entertainment Centre near you. It appears to share much of the guts of the Wharfie, but has a built-in Dolby Digital and DTS decoder as well, remote hackable for any region and costs £200.

It`s not on your list, but I would definitely suggest you check out the Aiwa DV370 (available from Comets for 199.99 or http://www.hed.co.uk for 169.99)

There is a simple multi-region hack (see elsewhere on this forum or I can post it again if required). It handles DVD, CD-R, CD-RW, VCD (unlike the LG 3350), and MP3 (v nice ,same as LG 3350 - MP3 sound is also output via the Coax output which is handy). Picture and sound quality are excellent, and Aiwa is a long established brand. It has DTS support.
About the only thing missing is a built-in DD decoder but I have a Sony DD amp so that`s not an issue for me.

In short, AIWA 370 ROCKS!!!

Works a Gem, Cheers.
Yep ! I was waiting for the black one for 3 weeks and they said they had plenty of silver ones so I thought I`d take one.

SJF

Dont bother with any of the above trust me I`ve just been in the same situation as yourself.

My Advice and possibly of Jimbo, Dukey and Jezebabes is the Aiwa 370 this machine is priced at £199.00 from comet and does all of the following

Plays mp3, CDR, CDRW and Video CD`S it has scart or s video connection with a digital option and also is region hackable from the remote just do the following

1. Switch on
2. Press pause then key in 314159
3. Player display will then say enter code (meaning Region Code)
4. Enter 1 or 2 depending on region or 0 for all regions
5. Press pause again
6. Switch off (wait approx 10 seconds)
7. Switch on and enter reg 1 disk
8. Watch your movie it`s as easy as that. Enjoy.....

I would like to just re-itterate on the Aiwa, it`s a corker.

I`ve had the following players, and I`ll rate them in order of quality/features/price

1-Aiwa DV370 (ok remote, good picture but I still think the Wharfedale was better plus you can select a region to get around RCE, which the Wharfie can`t)
2-Wharfedale 750, (noisy drive, dodgy remote, but really nice picture)
3-JVC 523 (Crap remote, not a lot going for it really)
4-Samsung 709 (ultra crap remote joystick thingi, didn`t like my VCD`s, big pause when changing layers)
5-Matsui 110 (well ugly,no VCD, but had 5+ disc resume feature..nice)
6-Ariston 2000 (Just plain crap and worse remote i`ve ever seen)
7-Daewoo 2200 (looks a darling, fast, quiet, loads features but duff picture)

get an Awia enter the PI hack and Roberts your farthers uncle.

Cheers

LOZ
