Philips DVDr610 BLOCKED message

videographer of Stirling (Harmless) posted this on Saturday, 19th March 2005, 13:58

I got a DVDR610 at Xmas after confirmation that patch 22 fixed the previous
problems. 4 days later the tray locked (with DVD inside) and the
message BLOCKED came up. I took it back to Currys who replaced
the unit (but I lost the DVD!) Since then it has been fine and I was
pleased with the results and ease of use, but last week the new unit
also locked up with the tray refusing to open and the BLOCKED message.

Is there a known way of resetting the machine? Or even getting the disk
out? I will be taking it back to Currys but I`d rather not lose another DVD.
And if I hadn`t bought the 3 year warranty I`d probably be buying a
new machine too...

have you tryed turning it off at the mains for a min or so then turn it back on to see if that does it?

This is not a fault. I have responed before to this problem. It is known as a dealer lock and can be un-blocked by turning the unit off, then connecting the power whist holding down the power/standby bunton as you switch on the mains. It might also be the play/pusue and stop butons but Im sure its the power/standby butons you hav to press.

Hope this helps and let us know how you get on.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I tried turning the power on/off but no joy. I didn`t try holding the button in.
I`ve returned the unit to Currys who tell it me should be a week to fix or
they will give me vouchers.

Any idea why this "dealer lock" suddenly comes on? It was right in the
middle of playing a recording...

Will update when I hear from Currys.

Latest update is that Currys can`t fix it so are sending it back to the
Philips factory for repair or replacement. It could be as long as 28 days!

This is not good news given I`ve only had the thing a couple of months!

I have just copied this from the philips support website interactive help. Maybe it could have helped your problem or it might help others so here it is:

Problem Category Other

Problem Tray - will not open and or buttons do not function.

Cause Player is probably in trade mode. It will only respond to remote control and not to the buttons on the player.

Solution The recorder is probably in trade mode. It will only respond to the remote control and not to the buttons on the front. Temporarily disconnect the power cord from the outlet. While holding both the `OPEN/CLOSE` button and the `STOP` button on the front, reconnect the power cord.

Solution Due to lightning or static electricity, the player can stop responding. Temporarily disconnect the player from the power outlet to reset it.

When you get your DVD Recorder back try getting a device called a 4- way surge protected socket. They are not too expensive they look like a normal 4-way extension socket but have electronics built in to help stop lightning surges and other surges from ruining your equipment. Maybe it will help. - Even better the other week I was in Homebase DIY and I saw a surge protected adaptor with protection also on the UHF Aerial side of things as well to help protect equipment from surges even better. - not too expensive around a tenner.

All PC users should think about fitting a surge protected socket as well as all these kind of `delicate` devices including DVD recorders can be affected by surges not just by lightning but by everyday surges from hoovers, fridges/freezers, electric showers and other heavy electrical sources or stuff with motors in them.

Good advice about filters but sadly I already follow it, I use surge protected
boxes for all my electronic kit -- HiFi, TV and PC.

Currys haven`t fixed the 610 yet and I`m about to try using this forum discussion
to prove that they`ve had it for over 28 days (they don`t record the date!!).
If they agree I`m going to swap for a Sony GX300, costs more but seems
to have less hassle associated with it!

I too have the same problem. Was watching film last night and suddenly the machine froze up (I may have accidently hit some button on the remote while changing position in the sofa ;-). I`m now getting "blocked" message. On attempting to eject the film, the display shows "opening" then "closing" and ends up with "blocked" (I can repeat this by pulling power cord to reset the machine and attempting to eject again). It may sometimes go into "reading" mode and then decide there is no disc.

Tried john72`s suggesting of reconnecting power cord while holding standby key. This made the machine go into install mode and I had to wait for the channels to be installed. Once this was done I still had the same problem.

Also tried andyr123`s suggestion holding the open and stop buttons while reconnecting power. That did not solve the problem either. Actually the first time I did this I think it made the DVDR go into this infamous trade mode because it wasn`t responding to buttons on the machien, only on remote.

I guess it`s a hardware problem. Not looking forward to have to return it. It`s only a couple of months old and of course the DVD is still inside.

I have had the same problem in April. The same "BLOCKED" message appeared at the time I wanted to watch something I had recorded. I tried every above mentioned sollution without succes. The only thing I could do is to return the 4 month old DVDR to the dealer who sent it back to the factory. After (only) 3 weeks I was able to collect the machine from the dealer.

Yesterday I tried to install the DVD without succes. When I put the machine on it said on the display "START UP" and that was all it does. Pushing buttons on the machine or remote control was no sollution. It is still in a sort of blocked position. The dealer told me 2 days ago when I collected the machine that the soft ware in the machine was completely reset. The DVD should still be in the machine but the machine is still unusable.

Today...I go back again to the dealer. When I can get rid of this machine and get another one that would be fine. No more Philips for me!

Well; I join the DVDR610 BLOCKED club !! :/
In the midst of a DVD I pressed pause, and then after a few minutes
the TV screen went black. When I next tried to eject the disc the
recorder displayed BLOCKED....The Philips support site suggests
a problem due to static electricity, but unplugging the recorder does not help.
I have seen previous posting suggesting that the dealer lock may
be activated. I tried one suggestion, first unplugging and pressing
eject + stop + play while plugging in again. I then see displayed codes
starting with NUC (what are these ?), but that is about it. The whole thing
fininshes with FAIL 090005.

The users manual suggests that BLOCKED is due to mechanical reasons.
What could they possibly be ? Could some moving parts activated by pause
block the eject ?

How could possibly a dealer lock be activated out of the blue ???
