over-riding dvd copy protection

londongeorge (Harmless) posted this on Friday, 8th April 2005, 11:36

Are there any programs that allow the copy protection (created when making a dvd) to be over-ridden.
I have some dvd`s made from old family tapes, but I cannot copy the discs, I have to re-copy the vhs tapes.
I have tried `dvd shrink` `dvd decrypter` and `smartripper` but none of them can get past the protection.
to give the whole family copies of old home movies means I`ll have to sit thru the things for hours.

any help appreciated.

Also, any known problems with the LG RC1000 VCR and DVD Recorder Combi. from Argos ??

DVDs created on a home DVD recorder don`t have any copy protection on them whatsoever, so if you`re having difficulty reading them on your PC it has nothing to do with protection.

In fact, it should be possible to "drag and drop" the VOB and IFO files from the DVD`s VIDEO_TS directory straight onto your hard drive, and then burn them with (for example) Nero. "Ripping" programs like Smartripper are only absolutely necessary if you`re copying protected commercially released DVDs.

Your reading problems may be down to the DVD-Rs (or DVD+Rs) you`re using - have you tried different brands? Also, are you finalising the discs after recording them?

If the home recordings are +R then use DVD Decrypter in ISO read and write mode. You may find that the copy to HDD fails at 99%,but as long as you don`t delete the file it will copy ok.
If its DVD-R,I am not sure what the problem could be,other than the recordings are corrupted in some way or are unfinalised

The machine that copied the vhs to dvd was a BUSH DVHRS02 and I checked again...........it does have a copy protection built in and states so in the booklet.
Is this a `one-off` and other machines do not have it ??

thanks for all the help

All dvd recorders have Macrovision copy protection built in to prevent you copying commercial dvd`s to the recorder, but your own recordings will not have any copy protection on them

A few years back I had several old cine movies that I sent to a company to put onto VHS.
A friend transferred thenm to DVD using his Bush dvhrs02 machine. The booklet says it puts copy protection onto the dvd`s it burns.

Using various programs to try and copy the disc to save me having to do it via the vhs several times : These are the messages I get

DVD Shrink : Access is denied

Smart Ripper : Hangs and doesn`t read at about 20% done

Video-Redo : Can copy to mpeg (but cant play these in my stand alone dvd player) and dont want to split the home movies onto more than one disc if poss, so haven`t tried svcd

DVD DeCrytper : ASPI Command Error
ASPI SRB Status: Interpretation: SRB Completed with Error
Host Adapter : Interpretation: Did Not detect an Error
Target Status : Interpretation: Check Condition
CDB:A8 00 00 04 D2 10 00 00 00 01 00 00
Interpretation: Read [12]- Sector 315920
Sense Area : 70 00 05 00 00 00 00 0A 00 00 00 00 64 00
Interpretation: Illegal mode for this track

I was thinking of getting a vhs/dvd recorder either:

Sharp dvrw250h
Toshiba dvr3
LG rc1000

All about the same price, any ideas on which is better ?
