Page 1 of Question 2 / Receiver choice from RS ??

Hi

There appear to be only 5 receivers from RS that are under £200 and provide DD/DTS.

Is anyone able to put these in order as to which is the best and which one I should buy.

PS. fyi: I want this for films but also as the dvd player (tosh210e) plays mp3, cdr etc, i would like to use it to play music cd`s as well. (speakers will probably be one of the eltax sets from RS also, TIA.)

I think i`am going for the "Kenwood KRFV5050 (Silver) £179.95" I`ve gott one that should be here next week from one of those homeshopping catalgos, they want 290 quid for it, so i`am gonna test it out from them, send it back and order from RS (If they ever get anymore in stock) and save sum money. I`ll let ya know what it is like next week sum time if ya can wait till then!

I`ve got the Sherwood. I love it for movies, it`s easy to program delays and raise the volume of certain channels if your room needs it. I was assured by RS that it was a musical receiver as well. To be honest it`s not that great with music, a bit bright, ok though. I`ve heard a few Kenwoods though (not the 5050 but its predecessor the 5030) and they sounded artificial, even with movies.

Get RS to put your 3 favourites aside and test them with the Tosh and Eltax set (I learned the hard way and bought the Sherwood on advice alone). RS have a 14 day returns policy so if it`s a marginal choice take the cheapest amp home, if you change your mind take it back and get one of the others. This way you won`t get stiffed with a credit note!

Remember though at this pricepoint a AV amp and DVD player will never beats a dedicated budget CD Player and Amp. You will enjoy MP3`s though, 180 songs on a disc and no need to get out of your chair for hours.

having owned a sherwood amp i would recomend that you avoid one.there`ye ok but not good,i also listened to the kenwood,also not good.i personaly think you should book an audition with the eltax speakers,tosh dvd and the yammy and nad amps.takes a little longer to make your purchase,but saves a lot of heart and wallet ache in the end.but you must listen too what you are buying,if they say sorry not had time to connect up the speakers or dvd insist on it,as the sound will change.also whilst getting your dem this is a good chance to be `indecisive`,and get some goodys chucked in.all the best.

re. going in to do a test in RS - I would feel abit uncomfortable doing this, they were really busy when i went in (only been once), so don`t really want to go to all that hassle.

Yammy products are pretty well-respected. However, the 396 doesn`t have DTS encoding capability. Here`s a useful link for you to read up on :

However, I would recommend getting an amp/receiver that does handle DTS - slowly, but surely, this (in my opinion) improved surround sound system is creeping onto Region 2 discs : Gladiator, Se7en, Chicken Run, Close Encounters of the Third Kind - more to come, no doubt.

Contact Richer Sounds in advance, and book a demo - they are usually really helpful. If you just turn up on Saturday afternoon, you are unlikely to get chance of a demo!

Don`t feel uncomfortable having a demo it is what the rooms are for. But it helps if you phone in advance to book it.

you wouldnt buy a house without viewing it first would you?get on the phone and organise a demo,without your interest and custom richer sound wouldnt be the good company they are today.they simply THRIVE on good customer service!dont be afraid,take the plunge and start to enjoy what dvd is all about.you wont turn back after this,you know that dont you?.... :-)
