Hi.

Is anyone able to point me to a site url where I can get some info on subs and what to look for when choosing one?.

I have decided to get the new mission M73 (front), new mission centre and smaller mission 700 rears.

Just a bit unsure about what to compare when looking at subs.

( ps. FYI: I was thinking of around £150 for the sub and will more than likely be putting this with the Yamaha RXV520RDS)

Unfortunately those 3 subs are a little more than i wanted to spend.

I don`t suppose you know of any particular make that go well with mission speakers do you?

As your speakers are quite adept at bass anyway,you should be looking at partnering them with a smaller sub to complement rather than supply the bass.If you can hunt one down,then the old Yamaha ystw90 is an excellent sub at £150.
Sadly aiming any lower isnt really going to get you top quality bass.Ive heard some subwoofers in my time and can wholeheartedly say that the cheap subs that are kicking around are simply NO match for the beefy,top quality units such as those found in my articles.
My advice is to save up a bit more and do without the sub for now.The m73`s are fine speakers,and will deliver more than enough bass providing they`re set up correctly.
When buying into bass,look for a good quality active design,dont just settle for the cheapest you can find-all you`ll here is a mess of low frequency boom and crash.

Hi Westy.

You`re quite right in what you say about the m73`s they do have plenty of bass, in your opinion therefore would you say that a sub is necessary?.

I have been told with these speakers that a sub isnt necessary by one person but necessary by another.

Therefore would a separate Yamystw90 sub make a nice ""noticeable "" difference to my setup, or not?

If you want something slightly cheaper, try a Monitor Audio sub. I paid £275 for the 110watt model Sevenoaks.

Also the cheaper RELs are workth a look, I think the Q50 is about £350 atm?

I had to return it due to mains interference (but that`s another story). But it demo`d pretty well.

I`d say go to a hi-fi shop for a sub as I had no end of bother and would have been stuffed if I`d bought off the net. You can haggle them down if you have an internet price to wave in their face, but I wouldn`t buy online for the sake of a tenner.

Would a sub make a "noticeable" difference though to my particular mission setup (m73) ?

Subwoofers in the `Pro logic Era`,would just take whatever bass that was contained in the whole soundmix and output from the sub.
In these days of 5.1 digital however,the discrete `.1` bass channel has a life all of its own! Of course,using the bass management on your amp you can send the sub frequencies to your missions,but the missions won`t reach as low as a sub would.
So you`re left with a fine line sort of decision here. Subwoofers DO make a difference,but in a small romm can sound horrible,so maybe your floorastanders will do the job just fine.
My advice to you is to book yourself a demo at a reputable hi fi outlet,and see if you can justify the cost.Ask the retailer to partner the sub with the same kit(or closest to) as you have(most retailers are more than willing to oblige),and listen carefully.If you dont feel it makes any difference then you havent lost anything and you`re a bit better off.If it does then decide o which sub will suit your system best,save up and buy a decent sub-buying cheap will just make things sound worse!

I`ve just bought M74, M7C1 and M7DS (£438 the lot). No sub as yet, although it will become necessary, even though the bass extension of those M74s is so good. I just need more ££ (and "meaningful discussions" with `er indoors). It looks like Mission will be bringing out a matching sub (M7AS) in the near future. I think I owe my bank manager a brief respite until I can audition that!

You could look at the M74s instead of M73s - you will get a lot more bass for £80.
