Looking to buy widescreen TV and DVD player - help appreciated

Ribs2Go (Harmless) posted this on Tuesday, 11th September 2001, 12:15

Title basically tells the story but I`ll add some more details :)

I`m looking to get a widescreen TV - no less than 28", preferably 32" or more. I don`t need a "budget" TV as such and am willing to spend up to around £1200 if the quality of the TV warrants it. It`ll be used for a mix of terrestrial TV, DVDs and videos so I don`t know what`s best when it comes to 50hz, 100Hz, etc (help!).

I`d like the DVD player to be capable of playing R1 discs, although I don`t currently own any. Seeing as this is my first set-up, I don`t know if I`m better off with a kit (players + speakers, etc) or separate components. I`m willing to spend up to £500 on the DVD if, like the TV, it warrants that much due to the quality.

Any help would be much appreciated :)

Cheers

I would consider the following -

New model Toshiba Picture Frame TV ( batch number forgotten) It has component video sockets, three scarts one of which is RGB capable. Can decode DD5.1 and DTS. Its got a full set of speakers. Screen also switchable between 50 and 100 mhz. £1500.00 approx.

Then I would go for the Toshiba SD210e. I have this player and its bloody superb. Average shop price £230.00

Get yourself some component leads. Approx total spent £1800.00, leaving £200.00 to spend on movies !!!

But this is only my opinion.

Pete.

Cheers for all the suggestions so far guys :)

Seems like Toshiba`s getting the votes so I`ll probably proceed down that avenue unless someone has a strong case for another brand. I should clear a few things up I guess:

40" is bigger than I can accommodate, I believe. 36" would be max that I can fit into the room with all my other junk. :)

The DVD player sounds like it`s got the vote though - just need some more help with the TV now :D

Thanks again and keep it coming :)

No one`s mentioned an amplification etc - surely you ought to at least consider an amp and speakers to complete the setup, even if it`s an all in one thing like the highly rated Yamaha VS10 at around £300 - you can always sell it on and upgrade to separates if the feeling takes you, but with that, a Tosh210 and a monster tele - what a setup!

For TV prices, try http://www.unbeatable.co.uk and also http://avshopdirect.co.uk - some prices better than unbeatable.

Which would you guys say is the best out of the following 32" widescreen TVs:

Toshiba 32ZP18P
Philips 32PW9576
Sony KV32FX65

I`ve basically settled on the Toshiba SD210E DVD player as no-one`s come up with anything that they think is better.

Does anyone have any links to info about amps, speakers, etc? I don`t know much about this area and was wondering if it`s something I really need or not.

Thanks again

Plenty of useful info :

You`d do well to start at http://www.homecinemachoice.com

You may also find regular visitor Westy`s section at Area 450 useful, as a lot of Forum visitors have :

Hope this helps

36" Tosh at just over £1500 here. Not sure if it`s a great price (and watch out for P&P costs!), but it has DD and all the speakers.
