DVD Shopper review all the `players` - Scan,Yelo,Encore,Lecson etc....
Just popped into WHSmiths and saw a new DVD mag, it got reviews of all the dvd players getting discussed on this forum.. I had a quick glance.
The scan,Encore and Alba got 90+% with the Alba getting the Editors choice. But some players got slated - Yelo and Mico
Now i`m confused as to which player to buy.. I was gonna get the Lecson but they said the Picture quality was abit crap.. But other mags have said good things about it..
I thing i`ll go back to VHS :(
RE: DVD Shopper review all the `players` - Scan,Yelo,Encore,Lecson etc....
I think regulars to the site will know just how in luv I am with my Home Entertainment 2000 Award winning Encore player, despite howls of derision from down below. RCE ? Am I bothered ? Not like these tip-top Top of the Range non-hackable Hitachi jobs....Seriously, get your butt away from the scourge of Satan (that`ll be VHS then) and buy yourself a Wharfedale 750S (http://www.tesco.co.uk) or a Lecson 2000 at Debenhams. At least you can always return it if it don`t meet your needs, as the retailers ain`t dodgy fly by night Internet jobbies...
RE: DVD Shopper review all the `players` - Scan,Yelo,Encore,Lecson etc....
I agree, the magazines can`t agree amongst themselves which machine is the best/worst etc. The reviews contradict each other (Lecson was said to have good quality in the last review I read). I makes you wonder as to what criteria the magazines really use to rate the machines. Yelo got a best buy award last month ! The whole thing sounds very suspicious to me.
You can`t go too far wrong with the Wharfdale 750S or the Lecson, and if you really do hate it, just take it back. Buy one and get on with enjoying watching your DVD`s :)
RE: DVD Shopper review all the `players` - Scan,Yelo,Encore,Lecson etc....
I took a quick look at the new mag recently and was surprised to see that the Scan SC-2000 was awarded 94%. I have to admit I`ve not seen this player myself but it seems to get a slating on this forum. Do these mags really review the machines we actually get to buy? The Scan seems to get top marks everywhere!
Karl.
RE: DVD Shopper review all the `players` - Scan,Yelo,Encore,Lecson etc....
The scan got a bad rep a few months back for having a poor picture, although you could say it was okay for a budget player and having faulty rgb.
The RGB has been fixed and soon the next batch will have a supposed better mpeg card that improves pixelation in dark shaded areas.
Maybe this mag has one of these new player`s.
One thing you have to take into consideration with these magazine reviews, is the guy who reviews that specific player usually does not purchase it out of his own money!
That makes a big F*cking difference in my book.
RE: DVD Shopper - The scores on the doors
Just picked up a copy of this mag as I seem to be on the market again for a player. Definitely a recommended read for those about to buy. Their verdicts for players under £200 are:
ALBA DVD-103
Fantastic value for money. Not the best performer, but at the price, who cares? 95%
MATSUI DVD-110
The first cheapy now really shows its age. There are better budget player around now. 55%
MICO DVD-A980
Everything you could wish for - except performance. 66%
SCAN SC-2000
Excellent performance, it`s a steal at half the price. 94%
YELO 800DVD
Good performance for the price, but tricky to use. 65%
GOODMANS GDVD-100
It`s cheap, but not cheerful - you could do better. 45%
LECSON DVD-900
You get a bucket load of features for your money. 72%
PROLINE DVD1000
Great player for the money, but looks cheap as chips. 82%
ENCORE DV-450
Not much to look at, but a good performer. 94%
I find the score of the Mico very strange. The actual review reads quite positive and then they only give it 66% despite all the extra features. They then rate the Scan and Encore at 94%, which goes against everything this forum suggests!
In the Mid-Range category they rate the HITACHI DV-P505`s "Solid performance and sensible features" at 82% (which should make Ironduke happy). Whilst they rated the LG DVD-3350E at 90% and awarded it "Best Picture". Hmmm, I`m tempted.

RE: DVD Shopper - The scores on the doors
Troll, I`ll think you`ll find the only people to slate the Encore have been Duke (hardly fair competition - multimillion pound company versus Korean back street sweat shop chicken shed) and some other loudmouthed yob (er, me actually).
Did you know you can get it in silver now too (no, really, I`m not lying : check http://www.encoredirect.co.uk if you wanna looksee - £199).
In all honesty it`s not that bad a player - probably on a par with the Alba I reckon - i.e. not the best piccy in the world.
Someone once said to me, Clayts if you wait and wait till the perfect PC comes along you`ll end up never getting one because things change so quickly (I`ve finally bought one at last in case you didn`t know !).
I think the same rule applies to DVD players, especially cheapo jobs - I`ve stuck with my ugly brute for better or for worse and generally it`s done okay by me.
Yup, you got it, Trollbabes - the moon on a stick is hard to find....
Cheers mate

IT TROLL, I had a mico and a scan both had serious problems, it comes to a point when what I want is something that does what it say`s does, and no more p*** farting about.
I really like the look of the LG, but it wasnt available when I got my 505 in mid august, also the fact it does not play vcd`s turned me off, but you can see why it 90% it`s performance is very good, it is made by a company who have now made there name in the electronics industry, and it cost`s just over 2/3 of the price of my 505.
But would I trade my 505 for one and a 100 quid back?
No. Because I would get the one that was possessed and refused to work:-)
HITACHI 505 ROCKS!!!!!!!!
