Thinking of getting this toshiba D-R150 dvd recorder from my local asda just wondered if anybody knows if this is any good recorder

This is a later version of the original D-R1, which I had when it first came out.

Firmware is still basically the same from what I`ve seen instore, and so is the remote. I remember counting about 78 buttons on it, which I thought was hilarious! A bit like operating mission control from your armchair!

The Timeslip function using RAM discs works well, with one button to start it going. If you intend to record to DVD-R and finalise the discs, there are a lot of nice finishing touches to make the menu screen look good, such as selecting the thumbnail for each title, and chapter, choosing whether the disc auto-plays on start up or goes to the menu screen, background colour of title and chapter menu screens, etc.

Not sure about this model but the D-R1 couldn`t convert NTSC to PAL, so although I bought it chipped for multi-region, I needed to buy a new telly as my old set wasn`t NTSC compatible, and the picture for all NTSC discs was fuzzy black and white. If you want it to play discs from other regions, buy it pre-chipped as you won`t find a remote hack for it! ;)

Unfortunately my machine bit the dust over a year ago - the drive failed, and it had gone past the 1 year retailer`s warranty period by a couple of months. Had I not had it chipped, I could have asked Toshiba to repair it as a gesture of goodwill or at a reduced rate, but that multi-region chip voided their manufacturer`s warranty in the first place! So it got binned and replaced by a JVC recorder, the DR-M7 (same as DR-M10 without DV-in). The Toshiba was the better machine of the 2 overall, as long as you had the patience to master the controls.

What was the picture quality like when recording from tv plus do you know if its macrovision free

Picture quality on the DR-1 when recording from Sky (I never used the internal tuner) was superb. I regularly recorded to DVD-RAM in 6hr mode, without complaint.

It`s a Toshiba - of course it`s NOT macro-free!!!

But you can easily buy a macro-disabling SCART lead for £20! ;)

Yeah, I`d definitely be swayed at that price!!!

I have got one of these, had it a couple of months now, and it is brilliant, after trying several other machines like the (dare I say it and swear on here ?) the Cyberhome 1600 and the Philips 3305.
The timeslip function is fantastic, means I can start recording a programme, go and have a bath or shower, come back, and start watching the programme from the start whilst still recording it.
The user manual is VERY comprehensive, I am still working my way through it, and still have to refer to it at times.
The only thing I am concerned with it is: when I play back discs that I have made on my PC (backups of legally owned films) sometimes it wont play them, or gets so far then sticks, not sure if this is a fault with the machine or the disc, it plays commercial discs without any problems at all, and plays back stuff recorded on itself very well, the 6hr recording mode is fairly clear as well, a slight reduction in quality, but I only ever use this long mode for a programme that I would have otherwise missed, then I wipe the disc after watching it, so not really a problem for me, if I am reording something I want to keep then I use a shorter mode, the 3 hour mode seems to perform very well.

I paid the full £149.99 for mine from Asda, now I see they are down to £89.99, even at £149.99 it was a fantastic machine, so at £89.99 I would grab one quick.........I might even go and buy a second one next week for the bedroom.

Highly reccomended, only snag is, it appears that you need the machine chipped for multiregion playback, a real shame as it would have been nice to have been able to do a remote hack for it, also, it would have been nice if it recorded onto +R\RW discs, but I only use the machine as a replacement for the VCR, or to transfer VCR`s onto DVD and from Camcorder, which gives an outstanding performance.
Anyone considering buying a DVD Recorder and who only wants to pay a reasonable price, I would say go and treat yourself to one of these machines, you won`t be disspaointed with it.

I REALLY wish I needed a new DVD Recorder! I just got my 5006 repaired but they used an older drive and it`s already started making coasters. :(
