What do I think of the Mico A980 DVD Player...

Peter C (Harmless) posted this on Monday, 23rd October 2000, 18:19

I`ve just recently brought the Mico A980 Multi-Region DVD player. However, within 2 days of use the jog shuttle spring broke off inside the unit so I sent it back to the supplier for an exchange. Within 2 days I got a replacement which I was excited when I received it. But oh no, as soon as I played any Region 1 or 2 DVD the picture kept on skipping and pausing every so often. I am now getting very annoyed as I thought the Mico DVD player chasis was based on Panasonic parts hence quality bits inside! Anyway, I am going to try for the third exchange and hopefully this one will be ok. If the worst of the worst happens I am going to settle with the Sony Playstation 2 which can play Region 2 DVD. Not sure about Region 1 but I hope some wise dude comes up with a hack chip or something so I can watch the latest American movies.

Question. How realiable is the Mico A980 DVD player? Does this company have stringent quality control? How come the people who build the Mico A980 cannot follow Panasonic`s blueprint to the letter?

I`m not going to bother with the Yelo or Shinco DVD players as I heard that they are a pile of pap.

Ok, enough said.

Actually The Mico, just like the other Budget Players are mainly built of PC Component`s, but some do have designer parts from Well known Brand`s.

At the end of the day, are MICO a well known brand who have been involved in the electronics industry for decades?

NO!

So quality Control is unlikely to be of a major importance as it would force the costs of the player up.

When these budget player`s work, there a bargain, but so many have had problems, it`s a case of trial and error.

If you speak to Briley, His machine is faultless.

A couple of magazines I have read have claimed that the Mico is made using an Hitachi drive and pickup!

And no, I am not trying to wind you up Dukey. (Although if I do, that`s an added bonus).

:-P

Yes it does use a hitachi loader from the old P2e I think, and I have mentioned this to carrot on this forum before TROLLUS MAXIMUS:-P.

The problem is if you are this small little chinese company taking components from hitachi, panasonic & pc companies putting these components that where meant for different machines together and making them works is a lot harder, add quality control & it get`s even worse. I reference the chap who have posted trouble with their Mico`s recently.

TROLLUS Had my 505 2 months now, never feasted on a disk yet:-)
