Page 1 of Which player..
Hardware Forum
Sorry to make another thread on this subject...
Anyway, I`m going to buy a DVD player, I`ve had a look around, and I`m pretty bewildered.
I know I`m looking for a region free one.
I don`t need it to play MP3`s.
I`m unsure about sound outputs, and pretty much everything else.
I had considered the Scan one which was selling for about 140 or so. But I phoned them up today and it`s out of stock and will be for another couple of weeks at least. The guy did say they`re bringing out a new model, and to look for info in a week or so, but I`m not really wanting to hang around waiting just in case I like it.
Anyway, the player will be used on a JVC widescreen TV, it`s 66cm visible display, so I think that`s probably big enough for me to notice if the picture from the DVD player is dodgy. There aren`t any speakers apart from what`s on the TV (TV sounds pretty good to be honest) and I don`t have any plans to buy additional speakers or amps etc.
So hopefully someone can tell me what I`m looking for, and what I don`t want to be paying for :)
Thanks.
How much are you wanting to spend, mate ?
hey dave
got a wharfedale 750 s i think the s is for s***e i just bought a naiko at marko for 99.00 and think its the best little dvd around cheap and cheerful
but if its over the hundred quid mark im beat good luck in your search for the holy grail of dvd players
Get a Toshiba either an sd110 or sd210.
I don`t think there is much between the two apart from the type of music discs they can play.
You can get a multi-region one for about £150 and £180 respectively.
I have an sd110 plugged into a 28 inch JVC and it`s great.
I am going to get the sony htk215 surround system next which gets good reviews on here.
Hi Dave, I`m searching for DVD player myself so I`ll share what i`ve managed to learn so far.
For around the £200 mark I think the 3 best are probably Toshiba sd210e, Pioneer dv-444 and Sony ns300.
All three can be obtained multiregion off various websites but none can be hacked with a remote.
Amazon.co.uk is the place i`ve found the Tosh the cheapest (£169.99) but I`m not convinced it`s multiregion. The best site is Web Electricals (http://www.webelectricals.co.uk/cgi-bin/webelectricals.storefront/EN/Product/1295%262D2)
where it costs £189.99 with free next working day delivery and it is definitely multi region.
The best place for the Pioneer dv-444 is probably Hifibitz.co.uk (http://www.hifibitz.co.uk/Warehouse/details.asp?ProductID=PIODV444BK) where the player is £179.99 with free uk delivery and is definitely multi region.
For the Sony I think Web Electricals is probably the best site again (http://www.webelectricals.co.uk/cgi-bin/webelectricals.storefront/EN/Product/1112%262D3) where the player is £179.99 and is definitely multiregion.
Personally I think for an extra tenner the Toshiba is the best bet. I`ve noticed on here a few complaints about a noisy drive and having not heard one myself can`t comment. Can`t be any worse than VHS or my pc though. The sound and vision, which is surely what counts, is supposed to be amazing and by far the best for a player around the £200 mark.
The Pioneer apparently has a slight problem with pauses occasionally through the movies and sometimes text will appear on screen. If you`ll be playing normal cds the sound is apparently not fantastic either.
Can`t comment too much on the sony because i`ve only really looked seriously at the other two. Sony are normally overpriced so to get a Sony player as good as the Tosh you`d probably have to pay an extra £100.
One last thing i`ve learnt from browsing the forums is to steer clear of techtronics.co.uk. I`ve yet to find a decent review of them.
Hope this is helpful to you and anyone else looking for a decent DVD player out there.

Hrm. I was hoping to spend around £150 or less.
I had originally thought on spending about £100, but since I don`t plan on buying another player for a while I`ll spend a little extra and hopefully get one that will do the job for a few years.
For the £150 mark I would personally go with the Toshiba sd110e.

It`s the model down nut I think it`s still supposed to be one of the best players for that price.
Haven`t investigated players around the £150 range so any other advice that you guys can give would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Baz
