Is there a big difference in sound quality??
It depends on whether or not you are used to dolby digital and it differs from film to film.
For example there is a big difference between dolby and dts on gladiator, dts sounding far better.
Also the fast and the furious has got to be heard in dts to be believed it is staggering!
But if you have not heard either of these before you would not notice much difference. Dts may seem a lot louder and have deeper bass!
I have a setup that does both Dolby Digital and DTS. I choose DTS whenever I can. Basically DTS uses less compression than DD and hence has a higher bit rate and provides better sound.
If you can afford it get a decoder which supports both. DTS also usually produces more LFE/Bass. So if you dont have a sub the difference will be less noticable.

I`m a dts junkie too - man I need that new Denon AV11 amp - dts 96/24 ? Pure madness, I tells ya :-)
Clayton,
Talking of the A11SR, you wanna buy a 3802?...........(yes i am mad-third amp in 6 months!)

Can`t you come to a similar arrangement with your handy friend, like last time, Westy ;-)
Right. I don`t know much about all this DTS stuff :P
I`ve got a scan 2500, quite happy with it. I like sound as well (the lamp on top of my tv fell off last weekend because I had it up too much :P)
There`s a decoder for both DTS and the other one on the player, so is all I need speakers? Or do I need an amp?
How much will it cost for something half decent?
Dave - yes you will need an amp - the decoded signal will come out of your player at line level (i.e. unamplified).
"Something half decent" - would start at around £300 ish for a Yamaha VS10 - amp, decoder and speakers in a neat bundle.
Can I suggest you go to http://www.area450.com/homecinema/avsystems.htm for an excellent run down of what kit at what price.
