Any recommendations for a new MP3 player?

andyk214 (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Monday, 5th June 2006, 10:30

I`ve currently got a Rio Karma 20gb HD player, however, the headphone socket has just died, so I can only play the player through the docking station. Because of this, I`m after a new player.

Ideally I`m looking for something with most of these features...
- at least 20gb hard drive (I`ve got alot of music!!!)
- plays MP3, WMA, and OGG files (OGG not really a neccessity, but would be nice)
- comes with docking station with RCA (?) sockets (so I can plug into the back of a stereo)

I`m not particulary bothered about video playback or a colour screen. Also, if possible I want to steer away from an IPod (everyone`s got one).

So, any suggestions???

I`ve been looking at a Creative Zen, has anyone got any reports, good or bad?

You have my condolancies. I will be very sad the day my Rio Karma dies. Its 2 years old but still outclasses most new players in terms of sound quality and format support.

Having said that though, I was playing with my brother-in-laws 40gb I-River this weekend and it is an excellent little player. Once youve got some decent headphones in it the sound quality is comparable to the Rio and its very easy to use. It supports the OGG codec, which would sway me as since ive had the Rio i encode all my music in OGG. I think it plays videos too.

Im not sure about the docking station, I didnt ask, but he was playing the player through a stereo with a headphone jack to phono cable and it sounded pretty good.

I have a sony mp3 walkman it stores 13,000 songs and battery last 35 hours. I think its fantastic. Only problem I had was that the software is over complicated.

Creative Zen -Woman in my office has Creative Zen, and she loves it. Uses it all the time and had no problems with it, she even thinks the software taht coems with it isn't that hard to use. Seems a nice size too.

I vouch for the iriver - I have the older version ihp200 with a 20gb hard disk. With sony earbuds (MDR EX71s), it sounds better than anything else I have ever had... got a nano with my phone (free) recently, and gifted that to a friend on her birthday... wouldnt change it for the world. Plays pretty much every codec I have thrown at it (havent tried aac so dont hold me to that), connects as a hard disc to ur computer so windows explorere to drag and drop. The firmware is upgradeable, and at least in the old ones (the one I have), you have a wired remote with an LCD display so I never take the actual player out of the bag except for charging. The battery usually lasts me 12hrs roughly... which is plenty!

A bit late I know, but just incase you haven`t bought one yet.

I`ve gone through 2 i-rivers and now that the guarantee has run out, my 12 month old top of the range expensive mp3 player is now in the bin.

So now I've stuck with my good old fashion CD walkman or if I want to listen to a compilation my cassette walkman, because I'm fed up and now can`t be asked re downloading music to my hard drive for the millionth time on to a crappy mp3 player that lasts only 12 months.

My advice is f*** buying one off the internet get it from Argos, it maybe a little more expensive than the net but they come with a 3 year breakdown warranty, so if it f***s up, you don`t have to waste your time unsuccessfully trying to contact i-river in Germany.

Also stick with a Sony brand.
