Are you getting the sound OK when you are just watching (not capturing) TV?

If so, then you`re halfway there. All that remains to do is double click on your volume icon in the bottom right of your taskbar and go to OPTIONS >>> PROPERTIES >>> and click the button to ADJUST VOLUME FOR RECORDING. Make sure the box is checked for `line-in` if you are using, say, a cable box but if in doubt, just check them all.

A really obvious one (but one I missed when setting up my step-dads TV card :D ), have you connected the line out from the AV capture card to the line in on your soundcard?

Also, there are a few hidden volume controls in windows sound manager, choose advanced and make sure none of them are muted.

tv cards either require that you connect to one of the inputs (line in or mic) on your sound card or by connecting to an internal connector from your tv card to the sound card. Looking at leadtek recently their so called deluxe card still required extrenal connection and only the top of the range expert card would do the internal connection despite internal connections having existed for ages these guys just can`t be arsed :(
The tv card only passes picture info directly.
Even if you have connected the sound to your soundcard you may still have to open up the soundcard volume control (windows not the tvcard) as often the input being used can be muted.

Thanks for all your responses.

I will try the driver update when I go back this weekend.

From the FAQ on the Aver website, I found this:

"first be sure that the supplied audio cable is connected from the Aver TV card
to the Sound Cards Line - in. NOTE on some systems that do not have an actual "line-in", substitute "MIC" for the configuration process below:

If there is still no sound from the Aver TV card, try connecting your PC speakers direct to the TV card. You should get audio (although low) this way. If you do - there would be a problem with the sound card configuration or a hardware problem with the LINE - IN ."

So it tells me what might be wrong, but not how to rectify it.

Could do without having to send it back to TINY, so will try the driver update.

Just to confirm, the sound is not present when Im watching TV, but does no come on when I capture it.

Also when I posted originally, I hadnt connected TV card - LINE-IN (or in this case, MIC)

I assume that it is not a NICAM sound AVer TV card. If it is then version 5.0.34 software does not work for the sound system. I upgraded to this software on a TV Studio NICAM card and could not get the sound to work. Avermedia then told me that the software does not support NICAM.

I would be curious to know whether you pick up background noise on the TV sound from the computer data bus. Low level noise was picked up by my TV Studio card and was most annoying when playing back recordings from TV on the home DVD system. Unfortunately, it made the card virtually useless as a digital video recorder.

Mike how do I find out whether or not its a nicam card?

It came pre-installed with a page of configuration instructions in about 126 different languages, and an installation disk!

:/

(pardon my ignorance if there`s a really obvious way of finding out!!)

If the audio button on the AVer TV control panel can be cycled through stereo, mono, dualA and dualB then the software has recognised a NICAM card. If not it should just be a standard FM mono card and the new software should work.

If problems continue you can contact AVermedia technical support through averm.co.uk. They do respond quite quickly but do not appear to control or have much influence over the software development and fixing which is done in the far east. Consequently, they are of very limited assistance.

though tiny may not be entirely reliable, supplying a pc with a card installed that isn`t capable of outputting sound seems somewhat unlikely.
