Page 1 of Reducing MP3 File Sizes

I`m trying to make some small mp3s to play in my phone. I`m using CDA X Tractor, and whatever I set the mp3 settings to, I get a 5mb file. Seeing as I`d only get about 4 of them in the phone, I want to make them smaller in file size. I`m not overly fussed about quality. What am I doing wrong, or can anyone recommend me good free software to do what I want?
RE: Reducing MP3 File Sizes
Try this ...
sourceforge.net/projects/cdexos/
... and its free. If you choose to encode the MP3 at a low bitrate, the filesize should be much smaller.
RE: Reducing MP3 File Sizes
thanks, I`ll give it a go :)
Hmmm, I keep getting a blue screen and fatal exception error when I try to run it. Not my day today :D

You can convert high bit rate MP3s to low bit rate MP3s in dB PowerAmp Music Converter, another excellent freebie :)

RE: Reducing MP3 File Sizes
And if you take a Wav file into Sound Recorder accessory in XP, you can make a very high quality small file sized wav by telling it to encode as mp3 but with the wav header...
