Phone that only receives calls. Prevents child from making calls.
I am not trying to be a BIG BROTHER type citizen. But, does anyone know of a Telephone model (cordless) that allows receiving calls but prevents making calls!
RE: Phone that only receives calls. Prevents child from making calls.
Wouldnt that be something BT setup? Incoming calls only. We had that when I was a student years ago in Plymouth.

I seem to remember you could lock keypads on some phones. Did a search and came across this: -
Philips Onis
Quote:
Keypad Lock - Lock the keypad to avoid accidental key presses. On incoming calls, it will be automatically suspended
I`ve always used Philips phones and think they`re very good. But don`t know if this is suitable for your needs. i.e. if you use a 4 digit code to lock the pad or press a button instead - of course the latter will be easy for a kid to work out ;)
Hope it helps.

RE: Phone that only receives calls. Prevents child from making calls.
Thanks to you both. That is very helpful information. The problem is I have the BT Synergy 3100 model (one downstairs and one upstairs). I think they are BOO-TEE-FULL. I really don`t want to get rid of them. The `children` I speak of are my family who constantly keep on making mobile calls from the home phone when there is a Mobile Phone with anytime minutes right next to it!! Needless to say, I have taken the responsibility of the phone bill but I don`t want to come across as some dictat running a military operation. I have decided I will stick up a notice.
PS
I have the following:
BT Broadband (2.2Mbps) - £26.99 :)
BT Line Rental - £12.50
OneTel Evening and Weekend - Free
And, I am trying to use 18866 but is this service 1p a call or 1p a minute?
PS Anyone know of any cheap call providers for 0870 numbers?
Thanks in advance.
RE: Phone that only receives calls. Prevents child from making calls.
A database of alternatives to 0870 numbers can be found here. Not all companies listed by most of the major ones.

18866 charge a 1p connection fee, then calls to geographical numbers (ie 01 numbers) are 0p per minute. My bill from 18866 for december to the start of march was £4.95! Also, at weekends you can call mobiles cheaply (2 or 3p a minute I think?). If you make sure you have the message at the start of calls, you will always know what you are paying.

Thanks SlipperySam that was the website I was looking for as I visited it before but did not recall the name of the website. (How stupid am I?!? Please, do not answer that.)
Thanks random_username I am urging my family to use 18866 for Daytime Calls. I feel like I am fighting a battle.
How hard is it to dial 5 numbers beforehand?!
The answer in my family is very hard...
Who was it who said you can choose your friends but you can`t choose your family. :)
Does anyone know of a way to dial the number automatically?
RE: Phone that only receives calls. Prevents child from making calls.
You can program the numbers in your telephone with the prefix at the start. So my 3 most used numbers are programmed into the memory with the prefix. Other than that, nagging is the only option.

Hi,
You can get a service from most telephone providers called call barring, which can have various levels set on it depending on what type of calls you want to barr - e.g. mobiles/international etc. They will give you a code you can enter to override the barring but as long as you keep that secret, no-one will be able to make whichever calls you decide to barr without getting you to enter the code first.
I know Telewest offer this service for £1 per month so I`d assume BT was pretty much the same.
Regards,
Richard

Just one observation - why pay BT £12.50 - the cheapest is option 1 by DD for £10.50. You could then put the saving to one of these (peace of mind) - they`ll even programme it for you at £2.
