HELP! Computer gone doolally!

Blue John (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 18th August 2005, 17:11

Hi all

My PC was merrily chuggng on with some stuff earlier. I left the house earlier for about 20 minutes to find that the PC had rebooted, but gets to the following:

Verifying DMI Pool Data.................
Boot from CD :
Boot from CD :
DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER

BIOS is set for HDD, then CD. Have tried sticking in XP disc, but get no further.

Ideas please?

EDIT
Went into BIOS & loaded FailSafe option. DMI Pool Data updated successfully & PC started fine (albeit slowly). Have been back into BIOS and changed the settings back & everything still OK. Bizarre. :/

Cheers

This is usually down to one of 3 things

1) Corrupt Bios/CMOS

2) Loose Drive (fard, cd floppy)

3) Imminent Hard Disk Failure

I would back everything up, just in case and reseat all your drives. and if that doesnt sort it, reset your cmos and flash the bios. If that doesnt sort it your hard drive is on the green mile.

We get that at work sometimes.

Sometimes unplugging the hard drive, and plugging it in again fixes it, but only for a matter of time. Basically when it happens, we try that, if it works, we order a few hard drives, ready for next time.

Sounds like the Hard drive, I had that happen to me. My advice if its working OK at the moment, back all your stuff up sounds like the hard drive is at deaths door :)

My sister`s PC did something similar a while back, only not sure if it actually recovered. It was put down to faulty RAM, which was replaced with another stick and everything now seems OK.
Personally, I would go with the other previous recommendations to back-up the hard disk and prepare to replace it as I also suspect that it could be on the way out.
