Broadband Problems

kennedy316 (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 25th March 2009, 20:32

Am cancelling my broadband with BT and have given the relevant notice. Am loking around for the best deal but have found that im in a crap area for broadband and apparently the best service i can get is 0.5 mb. This isnt a big issue as im not a big PC user, just email and banking but im guessing that this level of broadband is not great.

Im also getting the following message on the sites of the companys im thinking of switching to when i put in my telephone number-

Your line checks out fine, but there might be an incompatible product on the line.
It looks like there might be a product on the line that isn`t compatible with broadband. This could be something like an alarm system or ISDN/Home Highway service. This product will need to be removed before we can put broadband on your line. You can continue, but you may reduce any potential delays by contacting your telephone line provider.

Any advice on what this means will be greatly appreciated.

You might be on a DACS shared line. Read this horror story for a bit more info.

See if you`re in a cable area, then the phone line isn`t involved at all. The slowest they do is 2Mb ("soon" to be upgraded to 10Mb I hear). There are restrictions but if you`re a light user they might not be an issue.

Could get Sky Broadband but would be charged £18 a month which is a bit steep when i already have land line, tv and hd tv with them

Why are they charging you £18 per month? I have Sky TV & SkyTalk and can get BB for free with them (I choose to pay the extra £5 to remove the download cap)

Because of the area i live in and the distance from the exchange i apparently cant have the base broadband and have to go for a more expensive option

The max broadband i can get is apparently 0.5mb and Sky tell me i can only get Sky Connect at £17.00 a month rather than their free base service, £5.00 mid service or £10.00 max service. Surely if i can get a service from them (connect) i should be able to get one of the other cheaper options?

On a different note, is there anyway of increasing the service i can recieve to something better than 0.5MB??

You can only get Sky Connect as they don`t have their own LLU kit in your exchange.

If you have contract with 02, or even a simplicity sim card you also get discount if you get their broadband and within their range. I guess if you`re unable to get SKY with 02 also.

I`ve got the same problem can`t get Sky or 02 discounted rates because of my exchange. 02 offer me Option "ACCESS" for about £18 a month, but I`m paying less than that at the moment with F2S (which I wouldn`t recommend).

Our mates a few doors away keep getting phone calls from BT trying to sell them broadband contract. They`re with TIscalli who have offered them free for first 3 months, then £9.99 for 9 months and free wireless router (instead of modem) to keep them. We only get up to max of 3Mb round our way.
