Who do you buy from

Not so much a cheapest PC discussion but I`m just curious where you all end up buying from.
Online, instore, big chains (PC World etc) or even small local custom built.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what `it` was.
Now, what I`m with isn`t it, and what`s `it` seems weird and scary

My Laptop came from Tesco online, my desktop came from Dell (10 years ago)... i would love to build one but have absolutely no idea how to do it, and the sofware usually costs a fortune when bought separately!

That`s been the deal breaker for me in the past. I`d quite like the challenge of building one but add on Win 7 and there`s not really any saving. Don`t really fancy the Ubuntu route.

You should try Mint then! :D

My desktop came from a small local bloke (who is still going I note) with the intention. I`ve been mostly really happy with it, though the PSU was really crap and needed replacing a year down the line. However, because it saved me a bit I wasn`t too fussed about that. I`ve had it about 4 years now and only the PSU and the graphics fan needed changing, which is very good imho. I did end up getting W7 cheap when you could pre-order it, and both Linux and Windows perform really well considering the age of the thing now.

I would consider building my own next time, though I`ve never done it before.

Current PC came from Mesh.

Depending on how much you want to spend, and what you want it for depends on best way/place to buy. if you want a cheap pc for email, internet then ebuyer`s zoostorm pcs are v good value for money, or Dell outlet, i.e. not worth the hassle of building yourself, but it`s when you`re thinking of spending lots of money to play games, video/sound editting then building your own can be a more sensible option. Shops like Novatech do a good 1/2 way solution where you can buy barebone or motherboard bundles. Theyre` also good `cos you can buy a PC with no OS, again v good if you want something cheap and cheerful, or don`t need monitors, keyboards etc.

when it comes to parts for my PCs I have no allegance, wherever is cheapest, it seems for every good review you get a bad review about shops, or like most things, ppl are quick to blame but not praise.

I have good experience of  Novatech, ebuyer, Aria, Dabs, CCL, mixed of Scan.

The thing is, is Linux improves leeps and bounds all the time, the different flavours DEs, sure it seems a mine field at first, but you get ppl who use debian with say KDE, who hate Debian with Gnome, same OS, just "looks" a bit different. There`s a bit more too it than that under the scenes, but if you`re not interested you don`t have to be. I hated Ubuntu at first, used Fedora, Mandriva, now have stuck with Mint (based on Ubuntu) for years.

Many Linuxes are free so nothing to lose by trying. Ages ago, when KDE4 was new, they gave it to some ppl to try, and they loved it, they were just todl it was new Windows, so assumed it was MS Windows, and liked it, said it was a big improvement :)

My missus used Linux Mint for internet, email etc, XP for games. She couldn`t tell you anything about either OS, what a command line is etc, just knows which OS to choose in the boot  menu whether she wants to game, or surf, Mint works as fine for her as XP :)

Mint is working really well - Playing with it for the inevitable Windows 8 alternative.

I tend to buy from Dabs, Amazon and Ebuyer. I used to use Scan but I had a really bad experience that put me off them, and then a year or so later when I dared try them again, I had another one.

Strange how we all have a story about one organisation or another.
I have a similar tale as yours but mine was with Ebuyer.
