RE: Conan free with Total DVD

wouldn`t it be Conan as in Conan with Ralf Moeller, the big guy that was in Gladiator that pretended to be poisoned when he tasted Maximus`s dinner?
I think it`s the pilot for a series that may or may not have been made, and it`s been out for a while on a £5 budget disc

RE: JFK REGION 2 SPECIAL EDITION £9.99

I recently ordered and recieved the R4 JFK from www.ezydvd.com.au for about £7. Don`t know if the sale`s still on though.

RE: OMEN trilogy.. with 4 films????? please explain

the 4th film was a TV/straight to vid movie. If you`d seen it on one of its few airings on TV in the UK you`d understand why it`s not in the UK Omen set - it`s absolutely awful. It`s got really low production values, a very bad cast (including the lady scientist from the V mini series) and a terrible story based around the supposed pregnancy/offspring of the lady Damien layed in Omen 3.

I`d imagine the real reason it`s not in the set is more to do with licensing issues than anything else, although the trilogy never needed a 4th film anyway, it ended well enough with Omen 3 and certainly didn`t need a straight to vid follow up movie.

RE: Tesco Televisions Good prices

my local tesco in Northampton had a 32" flat widescreen reduced from over a grand to £599 last week - a mate of mine bought the same model for £1100 about 6 months ago....

RE: Breadmaker £9.99 at Tescos

I`m still waiting for my tesco`s to get them back in. The guy reckons the stock`s due any day now.

You boys will have about a stone and a half head-start on me by the time I start baking loaves ;)

RE: has anyone got "the thing"?

the gooey effects are still yet to be bettered by anyone. A real benchmark of a movie.
It doesn`t seem dated at all, even 20 years on.

RE: HMV Summer Sale

picked up

St Trinians 4 movie box
Brother
Blue Velvet
Oceans 11 (Clooney)
The Ghost and The Darkness
Chasing Amy
Bad Boys
Angel Heart
Nightmare on Elm Street
The Sicilian

for about £60. Not bad, there`s bargains to be had if you want them.

RE: straight to hell free

Alex Cox`s films are a bit of an aquired taste. Personally I think Straight to Hell is ace but most people would probably hate it. It`s not as accesible as something Repo Man or even Walker and it`s packed to the gills with non-actors like Courtney Love and Edward Tudor-Pole. The music`s excellent though

RE:

The UK DVD release of Commando was hacked to pieces - virtually every violent scene had cuts made to it. Unfortunately they used the same master for the R4 aswell. Very very shabby.

RE: Thomson TV - bright white causes screen to bounce?

I`ve seen the same thing through my vcr (cheapo Thomson one). I`ve heard the internal circuitry just can`t handle the sudden bright/dark combo. I thought it was my TV to start with, but it doesn`t do it through the DVD player, only on video tapes. If it only does it watching DVDs (as opposed to off-air transmissions/vid tapes etc) it`s more likely the player.
Apparently it`s a known problem with some models of Cyberhome players.

Not much you can do really

RE: Bargain home cinema systems

Just about every budget "all in one", or all the budget sattellite/sub/inbuilt amp combi`s I`ve ever come across have some kind of hiss or hum through the speakers. Even the videologic sets that go for around £200-250 for the speakers (without the player) do it. I`ve got a £200 acoustic solutions sattellite system from Argos and there`s a degree of background noise when the speakers aren`t doing anything, but once you`ve got a film playing there`s no problem.

It`s just one of those things that at the kind of price you pay for this stuff, you just have to accept.
Generally, the reviews in magazines I`ve read where people highlight it are written by people that would never dream of dropping down to the kind of pricepoint these sets retail at anyway.

Let`s be honest, you don`t get the performance or build quality of a £2000 system when you spend £150 at the local supermarket. You get what you pay for - like I said I`ve got a "budget" 5.1 system and I`m more than happy with mine even if there`s a bit of a hiss from time to time when the film`s not playing.

RE: £99 5.1 system at argos.

sometimes a coax cable can pick up radio interference, but I`ve only really heard of that with the kind of basic lead you get supplied as standard with these type of kits, and even then only rarely like if you live next door to a police, ambulance or fire station.
Other than that, I`ve yet to hear any real difference between optical or coax. Certainly not on the kind of equipment that I`m ever likely to own

RE: £99 5.1 system at argos.

the co-ax cable that comes with it is crap. I bought your system`s £200 big brother from Argos and the quality of the connections they supply with the unit are on the lower end of the quality scale.
Invest another £15 or so on a reasonable (budget) coax or optical lead and you`ll improve the performance a bit.

RE: Ichi the Killer R3 from DDDHouse

"the cut version" is a bit of an understatement - it lost somewhere between 8 and 13 minutes to the HK censorship board. The cuts render the film virtually incoherent

RE: Zulu - bargain at £3.99

oops, sorry, my bad. I haven`t watched it since getting my 5.1 system. I thought it said 5.1 on the box but I guess it doesn`t. It does have more audio depth than the others that are available though

Reckon I`ll creep off in embarassment now and hope no one sees me.

RE: Zulu - bargain at £3.99

I`d go for the R2 collectors edition myself. In fact, I did. The Picture quality is beautiful, a new high definition master was struck by Paramount/MGM for this and it really does show. The 5.1 remix adds a lot of depth to the film too. Nice bunch of extras aswell in the form of retrospective docs and an audio com. Definitely worth going the extra 3 or 4 quid for it if you like the film. It`s in the proper 2.35:1 ratio aswell rather than the cropped 1.77:1 that the budget US disc I used to have had. By comparison, the PQ on my old US disc wasn`t too good. Better than vhs (just) but there was a fair amount of colour bleed and reds looked more orange, although admittedly this has had a US release by half a dozen different budget companies like Diamond and Direct Source with varying results in quality (all of which were R0 rather than R1).

If you like the film and want a decent keeper disc of it, (rather than a binner disc you`ll eventually upgrade) I`d have to say spend the measley £7 or 8 and get the R2. I`ve compared the 2 and there really is no comparison.

RE: Attention Bargain Hunters!!

I just recieved my R1 from www.amazon.ca for about £7, pretty much the same price as the R3, and less than the R1 from CDWOW

RE: Dansai 955 3 Films £69-00

It seems to be.
The other film`s that cartoon thing with that big basket ball player fella in it.

RE: Help! - My Wharfedale DVD0750 has stopped playing VCDs

Try a lens cleaner first, but I found the only way to sort mine out was to take the cover off, locate the lens (on the disc transport) and clean it by hand. I used nail polish remover, but apparently plain old water is as good as anything. The cotten bud came up filthy and all my problems were solved.
No trouble since.

RE: looking for inexpensive 5.1 decoder and speaker package

The Sony "Babe" system looks like it might be the one for me to get me going. It seems to be about the only one to offer DPL2, DD and DTS for a low(ish) price.

Amazon.co.uk do it for £240 inc free shipping. Anyone know if it`s cheaper elsewhere. I`ve looked around a few places and most are about £30 more expensive.

Thanks everyone for your help, although I`m still open for suggestions if anyone`s got any as I`ll be mulling this one over for a week or so yet

RE: looking for inexpensive 5.1 decoder and speaker package

Thanks that should get me started.

I`m looking at spending up to about £250.

What are your experiences with sub/sat systems? I`m not expecting something so meaty it tears the room apart, but I`m curious as to whether these kind of systems sound a bit thin. Any comments would be helpful as places like Argos don`t exactly have these systems set up for you to trial instore

looking for inexpensive 5.1 decoder and speaker package

Anyone got any suggestions where to start looking for something like this?

I`ve already got the player (no internal decoder) so something inexpensive to rig it up to would be good, with a decoder built into the subwoofer or something like that. Ideally it would be able to take a vcr input aswell but it`s not essential.

Any good deals that anyone knows of?

Thanks

all these animated pop-ups are doing my head in

I`m considering not coming back here until someone stops putting all these nasty animated pop-up things on this site. They`re not just annoying, they`re REALLY annoying.
