RE: Inglourious Basterds
yeah, The Expendables is already the film I`m most looking forward to in 2010
The original rumours were that Inglourious Basterds would be an `all star` cast, with the likes of Adam Sandler, Bruce Willis, Leonardo DiCaprio, Arnie, Eddie Murphy, Simon Pegg, Stallone, Micheal Madson and many more linked to the project at varying stages. But in the end we get Brad Pitt, the director of Hostel, the bloke from the US Office and a weird looking Mike Myers cameo.
Not that it is a problem though, Tarantino likes to cast actors who perfectly fit the role rather than just going for big names to sell the movie, and I still think that Reservoir Dogs is his best movie and that was hardly a all star cast (not at the time anyway).
RE: Should I buy myself a Wii?
most of the extras for the wii are just gimmicks which do not really enhance the gameplay and I wouldnt worry about getting those. the wii zapper is quite cool but you can still play light gun games without it (and, also, at £20 with a game, it is hardly worth moaning about). the only essential accessory is an extra controller which isnt much more than a second 360 pad.
RE: Should I buy myself a Wii?
i`m not a fan of the ps3 motion controlled Sixaxis at all. most of the games i have played make it seem like something which is `bolted on` just for the sake of it rather than something which changes the way you play games (like on the Wii).
back to the original question, get a wii if.......... you like `social games` and often have people round for parties (it is still a great talking point a year after its release), you want to get friends/ family who arent traditionally `gamers` into joining you for some multiplayer fun, you want to play the likes of mario/zelda/metroid and other Nintendo franchises, you like the more active approach of games like wii sports/wii fit, you like original ideas for games dont fit into the standard gaming genres (e.g. cooking sims, medical sims) and if you like light gun games (with the release of the wii zapper, the wii should be swamped with them).
Dont get a wii if............you are fussy about graphics or want something to show off on a new HD tv, you want versions of some of the big AAA titles that come out on the ps3 or 360 (for example you wont be getting resident evil 5, or MGS4 on the wii), online gaming is a priority for you, the idea of brain training titles/ casual games makes you feel physically sick, you are more into hardcore action/ adventure titles (e.g. the halo`s/bioshocks/half lifes of the world), the control of the games appears too active for you, if you want to pick up decent titles in the sales or the odd cheap title (Nintendo games are rarely discounted to the level of their competitors) or you want some kind of multi media `does a bit of everything` type device.

RE: So...what`s this new PS3 thingy like then?
If you like social games and regularly have people round then the wii is a great console. it has some great titles, like those mentioned previously, however, as hard as i have tried to defend it, just go to any gamestore and you will see there are way more childish games based on kids franchises than decent titles at the moment (spongebob, tamogotchi, etc). also, if you are excited about big action titles such as assassins creed/resident evil 5/metal gear/GTA4 then dont expect to see these titles on the wii (or if they do, expect cut down versions). This is not me being `anti Wii` as i am a proud owner of one, i am just pointing out the shortfalls.
however, this thread is a ps3 thread and so onto my opinion on that, which is that at this moment in time i feel the PS3 is a case of `jack of all trades and master of none`. the sixaxis controller is a poor attempt at copying the wii and it isnt half as enjoyable to use as that. the blu ray is yet another Sony attempt at launching a new format at us (remember the UMD?) and i`m not going anywhere near a blu ray disc until they bother putting better features than dvd on them. as a PVR it wont be as good as Sky+ and the add on will be more than those freeview pvr`s that you can get for about £100.
as for the games, well they are typical examples of all hype/ graphics yet little substance. Heavenly Sword was tipped as being the first `killer app` for the ps3 but it just turned out to be a generic beat up em with huge production values. Ratchet and Clank? i couldnt care less about this bland double act, and Lair is just last generation gameplay with better graphics. Most of the other noteworthy games are available on the 360 plus on that format you get the likes halo, forza, project gotham racing, dead rising, gears of war, etc.
I think the real testing period will be the next six months as, by this time, the ps3 should be producing games that look better than the 360 (well, it is touted as being more powerful, so it is about time they showed that off) and if they play as well as they look then i might be taking back my last comments. there is also the exclusive release of Metal Gear 4 which could be interesting and could tip the balance.

RE: Grindhouse to finally appear in the UK cinemas???
i think they have missed the boat on this one. if they want to make it up to us then release the whole Grindhouse package on dvd. i`ve already seen the whole thing online and Death Proof at the cinema, so i dont think i can sit through DP again in the near future
RE: Do you think a good quality gaming show could still work on TV?
i dunno if anyone has mentioned it but there is a gaming show on Bravo on sunday mornings (Gamer TV, i think it is called). it is pretty good as it is mostly game footage with a voiceover reviewing the games and it avoids the trap that Gamesmaster fell into (i.e. Dominick Diamond trying to turn the show into the tv equivalent of a lads mag).
RE: Developments in the HD War - hmm cat & pidgeons
i think this xmas is definitely going to be when the winner is decided. I mean if the average punter wants all this years big summer movies on high def, they are going to have to get a blu ray for pirates 3 and spiderman 3and a HD dvd for Transformers and Shrek 3. The whole HD war is just a big mess and it needs to be sorted before i start replacing my dvd collection.
my gut feeling at the moment is the `underdog` format hd dvd may turn out to surprise people. from what i hear the cheapest way to get blu ray is a ps3 and even though it also doubles up as a games console there are going to be many who dont want to pay all that becuase they are not interested in the games facility, however, stand alone hd dvd players are now having quite a large marketing push and are being introduced for a couple of hundred pounds. i could be completely wrong though.
RE: Star Wars: Attack of Ewan
how about Velvet Goldmine? A life less Ordinary?
or what about instantly forgettable movies such as `the island` or `eye of the beholder`.
RE: Star Wars: Attack of Ewan
true, the stars wars prequels aren`t the coolest films to admit you like, but i have seen Ewan in a lot of worse or forgettable movies
RE: Rob Zombie`s Halloween
although i was a fan of rob zombies music back in the white zombie days i find him very overrated as a director. everything he does is so over the top and he has no skill in creating likeable characters...the kind of thing that works great as a music video but you need a bit more to keep my attention over 90 minutes.
RE: DEATHPROOF - QT IS BACK!!! Definately his 5th
to me it really was a `film of two halves`.
iSPOILER:
loved the first half, where we meet all the characters in the bar. i think tarantino did a great job of recreating the atmosphere of a good night out and introducing us to all these weird and wonderful characters. i also loved Kurt Russells Stuntman Mike and the way that, even though he is the baddy of the piece, he is a complete loser and quite awkward around people (like the scene where he is explaining what he has been in, yet no one has heard of any of the shows)
however, the second half annoyed me more than anything else. Although Tarantino has never really done moral characters i just couldnt take to these girls as they happily left their friend with a someone who is quite obviously going to rape her just in order to test drive a car and the whole thing with them chasing stuntman mike seemed a little harsh....i mean they could have just let the police handle him rather than beating him to death. I also felt the whole second half was a more of a showcase for Zoe Bell and found her `playing myself but not really` acting style a little grating.
all in all, i would say Death Proof is clearly Tarantinos weakest film and it is very different to what i was expecting, in that it is barely a horror film and more of a cult 70`s road movie (think Vanishing Point). however, viewed as it was intended to be (as part of the grindhouse package) it does a great job of recreating that 70`s b-movie style].

RE: 250GB Media Centre Hard Drive - About £80!!!!!!!!!
sorry if this is a stupid question but i was wondering if i can use this media centre hard drive to record of tv and external sources (e.g. Sky) or am i asking for too much for 80 quid?
cheers
RE: Sci Fi channel having a movie marathon starting at 3pm TODAY!!!
night of the comet!!
i remember that movie from years back. pity i`m out tonight, do you know if there are any repeats for it scheduled? (I`m too tight to get Sky+)
cheers
RE: Worst ever "Special Edition" DVDs??
I was waiting years for a decent edition of The Big Lebowski and then the `special edition` came out last year and the only extras were a `making of` feature and an introduction!! not enough to make me buy the film over again (i already have the `vanilla` version of the movie)
I`m sure there is potential for a better dvd than that.
RE: Is the PS2 still worth buying?
bearing in mind the original xbox has been replaced by the 360, hence the games slowing down, the same thing will happen to the ps2 once the ps3 is released worldwide.
Fair point, but a think the term `slowing down` is a understatement, as soon the 360 had it`s first christmas out of the way the release list for the xbox was lacking anything even vaguely interesting (despite the fact Microsoft said the xbox1 would be supported for 2 years after the 360`s launch). The ps2 on the other hand had a 18 month head start over the xbox and has a successor available in Japan/ USA yet there are still some pretty interesting titles to look forward to this xmas. I`m also guessing that in a years time, when the ps3 is established, there will still be the odd ps2 release (just like how they supported the ps1 when the ps2 was starting out) and the ps2 also has the greatest back catologue of the 2 machines.
Don`t get me wrong, i own both consoles and they are really great games machines, but for the casual gamer who wants a console primarily for fifa i would say the ps2 is the best option.
RE: Is the PS2 still worth buying?
If you asked me a year ago i would say definitely go for a xbox (better graphics, hard drive, etc) but now i would say unless you are desperate to play Halo 1 or 2 then go for a PS2.
You only have to go to play.com to look at the forthcoming release schedules to see that there is nothing significant due out on the xbox (unless you are really excited by the new Jaws game) and all the major software houses have given up on it already ( a bit of a shame as i felt it was never quite pushed to its limits). Also, (at least where i live in Nottingham) most of the high street retailers have completely stopped stocking xbox games (or if you are lucky you can find the odd place that has one shelf of xbox games). Even the Gamecube has Zelda to look forward to!
The PS2, on the other hand, still has decent titles in its schedules (e.g. God of war2, Bully, pro evo 6, guitar hero 2), has a excellent budget range (being able to pick up the likes of resi evil 4 for a tenner is a big plus), has loads of `party games` (e.g. games that also appeal to non gamers such as eye toy, guitar hero, buzz, singstars, dance revolution, etc) and, even when you have exhausted the back catalogue, it can double up as a dvd player.
i was never a ps2 fanboy during its heyday but looking at things it is the best console to keep you happy until we know the definitive next gen console to go for.
RE: Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang: Any good?
yep, it is def worth 3 quid
it has the witty dialogue you can expect from movies like The Big Lebowski (i`m guessing you are a fan of that) and Fargo, combined with the likable characters from Lethal Weapon and the backdrop of The Player.
If you like any of those films you cant go wrong with this.
Sadly, the trailer didnt do it any justice and it was quite a flop on its initial cinema run but it seems to be picking up a cult following on dvd. Hopefully, that will convince the studio to release a better version of the dvd.
Superman - The Ultimate Collection, which region?
Hi,
i am interested in buying Superman - The Ultimate Collection but i`m unsure which region to go for? Does anyone know which region will be getting the `best` version?
Playusa has the r1 version listed as a tenner cheaper and it comes with a tin box, comics, etc. The description of the r2 version on play.com doesnt mention these extras but that is not to say that a limited edition version will not come out in this country.
Obviously the R1 version is the best deal at this stage but i would rather buy r2 to avoid customs.
apologies if there are other threads about this topic.

RE: oz: season 6 on dvd
I buy quite a few discs from other regions but i never buy R1 box sets because they often require you to pay custom charges. Also, most of the R1 sites I shop with (playusa, etc) seem to charge more money for box sets than uk sites. can anyone advise me of any sites where i can buy american tv series, like OZ for a reasonable price?
RE: What ever had happened to SHIELD series being released in UK?
Quote:
Don`t know if anyone knew but there was a `crossover` once where (could be mistaken here) claudette went to help another police dept out in another show like Law and order/the wire. forget which show
i`m sure i saw the tail end of a Law and Order:Special Victims, which featured the actress who plays Claudette. This might be what you are thinking of, although i dont think she was actually playing Claudette.
RE: What ever had happened to SHIELD series being released in UK?
i think the blame for the poor viewing figures is due to Channel 5 completely neglecting the show. If you watch anything on C5 after 9pm you are guaranteed to see several adverts for House, CSI, Greys anatomy, Big Love, etc...but where are the adverts for The Shield?
Just look how they went over the top promoting Prison Break earlier this year...they advertised in every CSI commercial break, they had magazine/ billboard adverts, they repeat the show the following night and they gave up a whole friday night to repeat the first few episodes.
yet the new series of The Shield came on in mid summer with very little advertising and was pushed into the graveyard slot of 11pm on fridays (and it was on later last week).
i`m not comparing the two series (i like them both) but you would have thought they could adopt a similar marketing strategy with The Shield as they do with their other American imports.
btw, does anyone know what happened to the videogame of the series that was due out a couple of years back? (i know the gaming forum is more relevant but i just thought i would ask while i`m on the subject)
RE: Remakes that are better than (or as good as) thre original
I thought the dawn of the dead remake was a great film in its own right (although not quite as good as the original).
Assault on Precinct 13 was a excellent remake and, like the above, it was very different to the original.
i also enjoyed the remake of texas chainsaw massacre...but i might be in a minority there
RE: 24 hour party people
cheers for the help, it is much appreciated.
Can anyone tell me if the features on disc 2 are any good? i dont know whether to search around for it or just go for the cheap 1disk version on play.com
24 hour party people
After seeing this on TV recently I decided that i needed to get this great movie on dvd. However, most websites only list a 1 disc edition which makes me think that at one time there was probably a 2 disc version in existance.
Could anyone please tell me if this is correct? and, if so, what extra features does it have? and where can i get it from?
RE: The Night Watch/ Nochnoi Dozor
i saw Nightwatch a couple of weeks ago...it is quite enjoyable if a little confusing at times. Do not go in expecting the `russian Matrix/Lord of the Rings/Star Wars` though...i would say the nearest comparison is the Blade movies with a few Star Wars pretensions (e.g. light versus dark). I really liked the look of the film, it is very stylish and puts a lot of Matrix imitators to shame. i`ll definately check out the next 2 movies.
any news on the R1 or R2 dvd release?
RE: The new (R2) Superman box-set...
As far as i can tell it is just the original R2 boxset with the addition of superman 3 and 4 (which i dont think can be brought separately in this region).
I`m not too sure about the packaging but i`m guessing that, from the collection you have listed, you will have it all already
hope that helps
RE: csi: the tarantino episodes
erm, not really. i was wondering if there are any features that are exclusive to that edition (e.g. Tarantino commentary/intro, making of, etc). 2 old episodes of csi are hardly exclusive to the stand alone tarantino dvd as you can find them on csi box sets that are already available. i realise that these are the only extras that the webstores have listed but it is often common for extra features to be changed from what has been originally announced.
secondly, i wanted to know if the region 1 box set of series 5 (due out on the 29th of November) could be found any cheaper than £29.99 (which playusa are charging for it)
any help would be much appreciated
RE: csi: the tarantino episodes
cheers for the link even though it didnt really answer either of my questions.
csi: the tarantino episodes
Hi,
I saw on play.com that they are selling the Tarantino directed episodes of csi on a stand alone disc for tenner. I was about to preorder it until I had a quick glance on playusa.com and discovered that season 5 box set is scheduled to come out in november. This is a more tempting purchase as it contains all of season 5 as well as the Tarantino finale.
However I was wondering if the uk `stand alone` edition has any special features which are exclusive to that edition (play doesn`t mention any).
Also, playusa are selling the whole season box set for 30 quid and i`m convinced i could get it for cheaper, does anyone have any ideas where from?
cheers for any help

RE: Special Edition DVDs
Hi, here is my say:
What do you think of Easter Eggs?
I like the concept of them but i very rarely check them out.
What would you like to see in a Special Edition DVD?
I think trailers and at least one commentary should be a standard. Deleted scenes are also very welcome although they really need a introdruction or commentary to be worth watching. Documentaries are also a bonus although many of them tend to be very one sided extended adverts for the film rather than anything very in depth.
i dont understand why some special editions have stills galleries and i have no time for pc-dvd content.
The most important thing though is the assurance that the `special edition` is the most complete version of the movie we will ever see, rather than seeing it re-released a couple of years later as a `ultimate edition` , `turbo edition` or some other marketing buzz word.
Is packaging and a free gift important?
i have never brought a dvd with a free gift.
Packaging certainly adds to the appeal (e.g. the LOTR extended editions) but it would never influence me to buy a dvd.
Would you evre re-buy a title for the Special edition Version?
i have done quite a few times (lost boys, halloween, goodfellas) but only because the old versions did not have a commentary. i would never rebuy a title that is quite clearly cashing in on a forthcoming sequel though (e.g. the spiderman ultimate editions)
