Remakes that are better than (or as good as) thre original
Was just reading another thread on the wicker man remake, how much people dislike remakes, and even the idea of them. I thought there must be some examples where the remake has been as good as the original?
I know there are...
Just can`t think of any at the moment. Any suggestions?

Of the top of me head: Heat... remake of LA Takedown
RE: Remakes that are better than (or as good as) thre original
I thought the dawn of the dead remake was a great film in its own right (although not quite as good as the original).
Assault on Precinct 13 was a excellent remake and, like the above, it was very different to the original.
i also enjoyed the remake of texas chainsaw massacre...but i might be in a minority there

I hear tell of how the new Ocean`s Eleven betters the original, but I`ve never seen it.
The original that is.

Italian Job? I quite enjoyed the current one - but then never having seen the old one, cant really compare.

The Thing &
The Hills Have Eyes
are both considerably better than the originals.
The 70`s Invasion of the Body Snatchers was another good `un.

People get so upset about remakes. Tosh! A film maker has the right to try a new angle on an old movie.
"High Society" was a musical remake of "The Philadelphis Story" and BOTH were superb movies in their own right. "You Have Mail" was a modern retake on "The Shop Around the Corner". The movie remembered as "The Wizard of Oz" was probably the 5th or so remake of that title! But it is only the Judy Garland version that everyone recalls.
It`s not a crime to like both versions. They are usually very different, so should not necessarily be compared.
I have really enjoyed the remakes of loads of movies buit would not like to have to decide a preference between them and the original. In fact it`s not often I don`t enjoy a remake, if it is a genre I enjoy. Wasn`t impressed with the recylced "Psycho" or the new "Amityville Horror". Other than that, Hollywood keep `em coming! :D
Some say I`m from Biddenden. Some say my name`s Sue. Some say I`m really Marge on a mission.

I can only think of The Fly (Cronenberg) and Heat (Mann) as remakes that are superior to the original they`re based on. As a general rule, once a film is remade it ceases to have any originality and, unless the director does something very special, the remake is in danger of being banal. Just off the top of my head remakes I thought were inferior in every way are:
The Ring
The Grudge
The Italian Job
Psycho
The Omen
Alfie
Lolita
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978 )
Flight of the Phoenix
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Dawn of the Dead
Nosferatu
There are others but I can`t think of any at the moment.

I`d agree with The Fly, Heat and Hills Have Eyes, all much better
Could Desperado be classed as a remake of El Mariachi? If so I`d include that too
