PVR-A1 Media Centre around £80

kacetwo (Harmless) posted this on Saturday, 19th February 2005, 21:51

The reviews on this seem good and it`s the cheapest price I have seen for it at present

Does anyone have personal experience of it?

these are terrible. I got one 4 or 5 months ago with a 1 gig card.

recording on it is a waste of time as an hour of video takes 600 meg.

playing back stuff is a waste of time as you need to use asf format which no one supports. The app that comes with it is buggy as hell and crashes all the time.

The screen is rubbish, the controls are rubbish.

mp3 doesn`t even support tags.

stay well clear imho. by the time you add a 1 gig card it`s up to 130-150 quid.

For <200 quid buy an archos gmini400. I did. night and day. plays every video you through at it.. 20 gig harddrive, etc.

I would love to buy an Archos gmini 400 for less than £200, but can`t find it anywhere at that price - perhaps you could point us in the right direction???

As soon as I can get one for £200 I`ll be in there . . .

though of course a psp doesn`t come with a 20gb hard drive like the gmini does...

but then the gmini400 doesn`t record tv directly like the mustek does. (but then it sounds like a much better made product)

I remember seing some fairly poor reviews of the Mustek one a while back.. its featuresx sound great, but it has been around for a very long time and always been pretty cheap, so there has to be something wrong with it.

PS/ Finally got to see (but not play with) a PSP at the weekend and i have to say (a) it looked HUGE, and very bricklike.. hope it is lighter than it looks. (b) it doesn`t look as styleish in real life as it does in all the shiny pics. If only they had put a hard drive in it instead of that UMD drive (it looks big enough) and an sd card slot instead of stupid memorysticks then it could have been a winner...

not sure about the gmini, but my mate has an archos av400 (20gb model) and that does record straight from the tv (he records stargate atlantis to watch on the train into work)

not too bulky, and transfer rate is pretty good too. Think he managed to get it a few notes shy of £300 in about november.
