I`ve let myself down....free dvd in newspaper confession....

:/ I`ve let myself down, I`ve let the team down...

....I`ve only gone and bought the Torygraph to get my grasping hands on a `free` copy of Brighton Rock (today) ....haven`t looked at the transfer yet though irresistable.

Console yourself with the motoring section. Honest John`s column is full of good advice and he`s a thoroughly decent bloke. (Oi, HJ, will this do?)

Think yourself lucky, it could have been the grauniad giving away free discs! Saying that, always useful when you run short of Andrex!

To be honest, I rarely go out and buy a rag bar the local evening paper so come the weekend I find myself checking whatever paper`s giving away the best DVD. Got the Richard Harris `Gulliver`s Travels` today with the Mail which seems like a classic bit of post-Sunday lunch viewing, but most times I won`t even read the paper bar a cursory glance. I`m sure they all bang on about their circulation rising massively but thats unsurprising if its only for one day, over a period of time I doubt its a similar result. It`s all down to the consumer surely - spend up to £20 on a DVD or get it for (max) £2 at the weekend? Hmm. The broadsheets are doing a great job of filling my world cinema collection, for example, but other than that they basically just fill the hamster`s cage.

I`d love to know how many folk keep on buying the paper after the freebie, rather than switch when another paper does something the next weekend. OK, the Sun haven`t been too bad with their Carry On / British sitcom movies giveaways across a whole week (surely just a matter of time before Dam Busters et al turn up there, probably once the World Cup kicks off to give a jolly spiffing burst of Britishness to the nation) but there are so many classic titles in that Studio Canal archive that could be given away for example... *runs off to check the Sunday papers, freebie DVD whore that I am*

... And I have to chuckle with companies such as HMV banging on about `devaluing of product` and the like by these promotions. I work in a DVD shop and when the Sunday Times gave away Donnie Darko a few weeks back we sold a damn sight more copies of that afterwards than we did in the weeks before. Bar that, the titles that get given away are at best niche titles that would sell in pitifully small numbers anyway or (as in The Sun) titles that have for the time being been deleted.

Not recommended, the print comes of on yer bum.

Only indulged in two offers, Donnie Darko and The Wicker Man and never even opened the papers on either occasion.

The occasional sales `spikes` from free DVDs make quite a big difference to the papers` average circulation figures. This means they can charge a lot more for advertising space.
