Page 1 of Best Classic (pre 1950) horror film?
DVDs & Films Forum
I`ve just received my Monster Legacy Box Set from DVD Pacific and it got me thinking `what is the best classic horror film?` (let`s say pre 1950, and no I`m not saying there are no classic horror films made after 1950 I`m just using it as a cut off point ;) )
So what do you think?
RE: Best Classic (pre 1950) horror film?
Frankenstein & Bride of Frankenstein have always been my fave. Just outside the definition (early fifties) and it woud have been the Quatermass experiment.
Love that Universal monster set though :)

I`ve got to order myself that set, too! Just hope I don`t get clobbered with customs! :/

I ordered the Wolf Man set, Disc 1 wont play on my Panny E50
Then I got frankie, and then dracula (thought that I would make up the set)
I avoided the box set because of customs.
Great movies though, a little tacky, but what do you expect from the era.
Fave though was always Creature From the Black Lagoon. (not sure if that was pre 1950 though)

One of my personal favs(apart from the ones already mentioned) is The Uninvited from 1944,a creepy little ghost story with Ray Miland

If you`ve got the Monster Legacy, you`ve got most of the best (the Frankenstein cycle). I`d add the Karloff "Mummy" and Claude Rains in "The Invisible Man".
EDIT: Oh, and I`d chuck in "Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein"

I`d chuck in Abbott and Costello meet anybody. If you`ve never heard them do "Who`s on first base" you haven`t laughed properly yet.
If we`re allowed comedy horror I may have to vote for The Cat & the Canary with Bob Hope and Paulette Goddard

"Cat and the Canary" is one of the best comedy-horrors ever. The R2 print that`s currently out isn`t the best quality, but better than nothing. You can also get the sequel "The Ghost Breakers" in R1. Of course the best ever comedy horror is Cary Grant`s "Arsenic and Old Lace" which is always in the sales.
If I had to pick a top five "straight" classic horrors, they`d be "Frankenstein" 1931, "Dracula" 1931, "Bride of Frankenstein" 1935, "King Kong" 1933 and "The Invisible Man" 1933.
For me, the lid goes down on horror in 1973; I can`t think of anything I like in the genre after that date. I particularly loathe the "teenslashers" genre (Chainsaw/ Elm Street/ even the Screams).

And says his prayers by night,
May become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms
And the Autumn moon is bright.

Here`s my recommendation of the golden age of horror.
Nosferatu (the silent classic)
Cat People
Ghost Catchers (bob hope)
Cat and Canary
Spiral Staircase
King Kong
Phantom of the Opera (silent classic)
Beast with five fingers
Creature from the black lagoon
Invisible man
Black cat
The Raven
Murders in the Rue Morgue
Young Frankenstien (ok so it was made in the 70s but its the best homage to the original)
