Who is responsible for scratching DVD`s at Rental Company ???!!!

foxmeister (Competent) posted this on Wednesday, 16th March 2005, 16:11

I`ve finally taken the plunge and joined www.globalerental.co.uk.

After only two weeks membership I`ve been happy with the turnaround speed but I am very disappointed at how scratched each disc has been, so much so that each one hasn`t played correctly.
I`ve been in touch with the company who state that they will destroy the disc on receipt and send out another but that takes about 4 days to sort out.

The reason I`ve put this thread on is to ask if anyone knows how these discs get damaged like this. It appears that ignorant cistomers do not know that you should handle them on the edge and not use them as placemats when they`re not your own property !!

Can anyone recommend other companies that are better at sending out discs that work ?

Thanks .. I`m annoyed !! >:(

Lovefilm - no duffers from them yet
Blockbusters - send out discs cleaned by Brillo pads

The amount of times I`ve bought a 2nd hand dvd from blockbusters only to find it`s scratched to buggery when I get it home. These day, I always check before I leave the shop.

To answer the question that is this thread`s title, the answer is simple - other people. Naturally, if they owned the disc, they`d take more care, but as it`s a rental, they use them as coasters

I don`t know, I`ve bought second hand retail DVDs before now that have been scratched to hell. I remember renting Euro Trip the day after it came out, 1 person had rented it before me, and the disc was wrecked. It`s the moronic general public, they can`t hold DVDs/CDs/games by the edges. Either that or they give them to their cats to play with.

This is a commen problem we have where I work, a film can be brand new in but after only 1 or 2 rents it has been runined, how they get in such a state I dont know as some look like someone has taken a compass to it and tried to make really deep scratchs.

Thanks for all your replies.
Received Raising Helen yesterday, my wife watched it but switched it off due to it freezing.
I`ve just received Out Of Time and looking at the state of it I`m sure I`ll have the same problem later .. I`ll be cancelling my subscription with globalerental shortly.
If someone isn`t able to look after a DVD properly god only knows what their houses will be like !!!

For many back in 1983 there was immense scepticism that a shiny round space-age looking disc would ever replace the popular and convenient cassette tape. But with the promise of their indestructibility - as demonstrated on BBC`s Tomorrow`s World - there was a slow realisation that perhaps the culture of music listening was set to change.

indestructible .....Adjective .....Cannot be broken.
