Page 1 of Names for a Baby boy

Just found out the sex of the baby. Any ideas? She want`s to call him Jack. Any thoughts would save me trailing through thoses s***y books.No p*** takers please!!!!! Surname to be Howarth.

Jack?...nah..too dubious. John, perhaps, which may be translated to Jack. Alan is a fine name...means `harmony` in Gaelic. There`s a famous musician called Elgar Howarth....but he`s probably copyrighted that. Old Testament names are becoming more popular, such as Joshua or Benjamin or Samuel....then again, the likelihood is that you`ll take a look at him when he`s born and a name will suddenly spring to mind. In that case, it`s probably better he doesn`t come out arse first.

Little story for anyone that`s bored and will read any old tat...

When I was born, my parents were stationed on a, RAF base in Bucks. They couldn`t decide on a name for me. So my dad went on the Base radio station and put out an appeal for suggestions. they got a suggestion from everyone on the base (over 1500 people, call me Mr Popular!). The most votes was for Peter (my real first name) and the second was David (which is my middle name).

Here`s my humble opinion. I wouldn`t want to name my kid any name that is really popular at the moment. I love the name Jack, but it`s been No 1 for like 3 years - so personally I`d stay well clear. I wouldn`t want to go to school where half the kids in my class shared the same name.

Whatever you decide, do the kid a favour and choose a name that suits the kid as an adult as well as a baby.

Well better not bother replying to this thread then......!

We faffed around for ages deciding on a name for our son. In the end, even though we knew his sex before he was born, it took us 6 weeks after he was born to finally decide.

We wanted an unusual name, but nothing too long or peculiar. We ended up with Kell - apparently old Norse/English, meaning "From the Spring" (as in water). Second name Vincent, after my grandfather.

I agree with avoiding Jack - neighbours have just named theirs Jack, and my heart sank. It`s a shame as it`s a good name, and years ago I always used to want to name a son Jack (after my other grandfather), but it`s ubiquitous now.

Dylan`s a great name.

We nearly named our daughter "Storm" - would have been appropriate, too :-/

Neo will soon become a very popular name.... personally I`d go for a cool Irish name like Oisin or Colm - remember, there`s nothing like a bit of mystery surrounding one`s name to attract the ladies.... your son will thank you later on in life for this little ice-breaker.
