For home cinema owners

floyd_dylan (Elite) posted this on Monday, 8th December 2003, 14:10

I was just wondering if the home cinema owners who either have DTS, DTS ES, 5.1 etc, when they're playing their movies really loud, if they ever had complaints of the neighbors?

The reason I ask this is because, whilst looking through Westy`s home cinema page, where he bangs on about loudness of bass and speakers, amplifiers, and all that stuff, I was thinking, well unless you have a soundproof room, and live miles away from anybody else.

It does seem pointless having a super deluxe home cinema system, if you live in a flat, or a normal bog standard house.

I know it would be cool to get the full effect of going to the cinema, but you really can`t have that cinema experience, when you have to consider the neighbors on either side, or above or below you.

I know we bang on about the arrogance of people in everyday life, either in a car, or if they standing in the street corners selling Big Issue magazines, but surely the same applies to people with theatre systems, who love to play their Lord of the Rings at full blast.

What do you all think?

floyd

p.s.
I haven`t had any experience of someone who loves to play their dvds really loud, but if they did, they would defiantly have a knock on the door by me, with a sledgehammer.

I have Marantz SR7300 with full 6.1 DTS-ES, etc.. & I have it so that when the sub kicks in, the sofa vibrates (and its on the opposite side of the room) so yes, very load, however, I am very luck as I live in a detached house & only have 6 neighbours who dont complain as im over 6ft tall with shaven hair :) but I can see your point. Ive recently (well my wife) have had a son (1 month old tomorrow in fact) & so far havent been able to crank it up, it doesnt seem the same. All my new DVD arrivals are still in cellophane, probably should have waited to buy most of them as by the time I get to really appreciate things like LOTR-TT Extended 4 Disc DTS ES 6.1, it will probably be reduced to £6.49 @ Play.com & ive had it 2 weeks or so already :( & today I ordered GI Jane in DTS (not sure why yet :) ) & will probably have to wait til easter to appreciate the DTS

Don`t forget kids. I only get to really crank my system up for a good slam-bam movie when my wife takes our daughter to her parents...

Otherwise we`d wake her up !!

I`m very lucky that my neighbour shares the same passion for HC as i do! I did recommend his system as he has a little `un with sensitive ears so wanted something which struck a balance between the slam bam and the quiet subtle stuff.

It only ever goes really loud when i`ve managed to blag some gear off my mate to have a look at - but then my room is on the outside wall and i always make sure it`s mostly during day time on my day off when nobody is in and the neighbiurs are all in work.

I`ve only pee`d them off twice - but they love me now :D

I used to work nights and often i`d hear their system crashing about, but it didn`t really bother me too much. But it is right to respect your neighbours, so you`ve brought up a valid point there Stuart.

If you want to know about p***ed off neighbours, ask my fellow mod....

Are you online tonight Clayts??... ;)

Hell yeah, after that showing of Saving Private Ryan at 3am it`s a wonder I`m still alive to tell the tale ;)

My neighbours are generally very cool - Tony will now bang on my wall or window if I exceed the "acceptable noisy neighbour" levels, and I`ve agreed he should do this.

Weird thing is I was a little tipsy last week and decided to watch my Depeche Mode DVD very loud and to add even more pain to the bombastic equation, I decided to sing along (screech along ?) at top volume.

I stopped at about 11.30am and felt thoroughly ashamed the next morning. I toyed with the idea of going next door to apologise, but asluck would have it I bumped into them in Bulwell, shopping. I apologised profusely, and to my absolute astonishment they said "it wasn`t loud". Wasn`t loud my butt - I reckon I have caused them permanent deafness.

Yeehaw !!! :D

Sadly, I`m the one that does most of the moaning. I`m in a block of flats surrounded by xxxxxx (term removed by moderator) . I think i`m the quietest one here

Thankfully, given the location of the cinema room, we don`t have too much of a problem, unless our 14 year old daughter (who`s room is down that end of the house) has decided to have an early night....

I returned home the other day to a note saying `Can the person who insists on making excessive noise for large parts of the day and all weekends please give it a rest` on the door to the communal letter boxes of our flats

A polite notice, but it did make me realise that living in a flat you have to excercise a little r-e-s-p-e-c-t.
