Are yelo and Scan still crap or have they improved at all now

GaryThomas (Competent) posted this on Wednesday, 6th June 2001, 00:07

I have in the past owned three scans (all returned) and two yelos . The picture was crap on all of them and could not cope with mp3 disks with long titles etc. I have today bought a copy of dvd buyer and they are still giving both these players top marks. Have they improved or are they still crap and are just fobbing us off. I am looking to buy a budget player ( as menioned else where I have a very small indeed budget) which plays mp3 disks and cdrs as I have a lot of mp3s on disk and vcds which I am fed up of watching on my pc. I have at the moment got a proline 1000 which is a very good player for the price( i had one of these players before i bought my scan and yelo ) so i went and bought another one. The only problem with this player is that it cannot play mp3 disks or copied vcds or cdrs. I have seen the Cyber Home ad-m 512 in WHsniths for £130 and it says that it can do all of these requirements. It also got a really good review in dvd buyer. Can anyone tell me if this player is any good or what abouth the Grundig gdv 124 which for £159 in argos yet review not so good.

Ps it says that the Cyber home is virtual surround what is this and will I be able to connect it to my prologic tv and still get true prologic surround sound. Please help.

The Scan has come a long way in the last couple of months, let alone the last year. The new models are firmware upgradable, so problems can get fixed. I`ve had mine since March and i`m more than happy with it. It supports mp3 (the problems with mp3 that you may have had before have now been fixed), audio cd, vcd and svcd (though there are a few problems with ff/rw in svcd at the moment, should be fixed in the next firmware release) as well as non standard vcd. Just an example, i`ve got a vcd that I encoded in mpeg1, using constant quality set at 100, with a bit rate of around 2000kbits/s, and a resolution of 704x576. Not exactly standard yet it plays like a dream on the Scan, brilliant quality. There should also be new features added soon (hopefully anyway) such as a feature similar to that of mp3, where you can just slap mpeg1, mpeg2, or even vob (DVD) files on a cd and play them with out the need of creating a (s)vcd.

If you want to know more there is a group set up for the Scan. The home page is:

Join and have a look around and find out what people think.

No problems with the Scan. Very versatile and quality is fine. It doesn`t have long names for mp3 yet, but it is in development and you can update by burning a cd with th new firmware.

I don`t know what the Cyberhome virtual surround is, but I suspect it not Prologic. It probably just pumps a small range of the sound, delayed by a few milliseconds out of the back speakers.
Cheers

Just owned the one Scan myself, and it causd no problems apart from the odd purplish flash on certain scenes and problems with some animated menus, but that was all fixed using firmware CDs. Fine and dandy now :-)

Future discussion on this one belongs in the Hardware Forum please guys.

Tapping `Scan` in the search facility should give you enough results to keep you going awhile - probably the most featured player for a variety of reasons, good and bad.
