Who reckons "O Jerusalem " should be the English anthem!!!Bout time they got a decent one....

I just reckon its about time England gets their own unique anthem as opposed to one shared by a nation. Wales have the magnificent Hen wlad fy Nghadau, and the Scots with their Flower, well the Irish have two..........yet England dont have their own.......................WHY?????

Oy England, nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, get an anthem

Well you must be right wing scum to even see any importance in a national anthem, and dumbass if you had any sort of historical knowledge you would know that Blakes Jerusalem is far from a national anthem. William Blake was a radical and a visionary, he was harassed by the estabishment of the day, eventually being arrested for sedition. Written at the time of the Industrial Revolution, this song is an attack on the new breed of capitalists that Blake saw in his midst. It asks how can the morals of Christ be compatable with the morality of exploitation, both of people and the enviroment. This is NO national anthem, if anything it is an anthem of the Left.

"Abide with me" would be my choice - never fails to bring a tear to my eye, that one.

I see we have an apostle of Marx in our midst :-)

If Jerusalem is a lefty anthem, well that`s out. How about the Dambusters theme?

Capitalism rules, OK?

er...a little perturbed to be described as `right wing scum` just because I happen to love my own little Anthem (slightly mis-spelled above, but it doesn`t matter). The importance of a song such as this lies in the feeling any decent song gives you when you sing it, whether on your own or in a huge crowd, many of whom can`t sing a note (but who cares!). If the song gives you a sense of pride in your heritage and the people who brought you up, and the people who brought them up etc ect then all well and good. I`m not aware of the Welsh Anthem containing anything apart from a feeling of how great it is to be born in Wales. There`s certainly nothing in it that slags off anyone else, unlike that of our closest neighbour. It`s a shame some people feel threatened by a sense of pride, as there`s certainly no threat intended.
Anyway, as for Jerusalem - the tune was written by Herbert Parry - a Welshman :-0).

I still think the theme from The Great Escape should be our anthem.

I have to agree with Alan............To me the nature of the anthem is something that brings a nation together in song, thats fills them with pride, anxiety, unity and can even bring a tear to a grown mans eye. Oh jerusalem did this to many fans in France 2000 as Im sure it will do next year in the world cup.....

I have to say that if Phil De La Nacho has never felt this then I feel genuinely sorry for the man. To go arm in arm and sing your heart out with a person u have never seen or met b4 in your life is to me at least, something special and something that I feel the English miss out on somewhat by not having their unique anthem but something people cherish....................and now for Jerrys Final Thought.....

I`d settle for anything that didn`t glorify a Greco-Germanic royal family, but perhaps that`s right wing to the point of xenophobia!
