I know, to an accountant or someone who knows, the SA online service will be a doddle.
To little ol` me, Joe Bloggs from the middle of nowhere it so feckin confusin it`s unreal!
Probably easier next time around but I`m just brickin` it cos there`s some of the stuff to fill in is a wee bit different for peeps like me (eg: I work from home therefore my business address is my home address but the BASE my radio works from has a different address so which should I have...?)
I`ll ring their helpline tomorrow but I suppose that`s what I get for waiting til January to fil online cos it lets me go another 3 months before physical submission.
Anyone else done it and found it easy/hard/gave up and paid an accountant?

Who seems to have lost all interest in wrapping up my tax affairs since I gave notice that I wanted to wind up the company. >:(
It`s been filed BTW (while company was still trading).
I consider myself an optimist, albeit an optimist with cynical tendencies and a dark side that Lucifer himself would find a little creepy. (Perhaps you've noticed.) You don't normally associate cynicism with an upbeat pov. But I have exactly that combination and will defend it.

Paid an accountant, I posted here about it back in the Summer.
Did the online thing last year when I was part time, was easy. This time there`s nowhere to tell you to take off the five thousand and odd you`ve earnt that is tax exempt (at least I looked it over several times and didn`t see anywhere about it) - meaning you could pay a hell of a lot tax more than you actually owe.
The acoountant was also able to include a lot more stuff that I didn`t know I could claim for to do with the business, so I`d say go down that route, I will be from now on. Cost me a couple of hundred but saved me nearly a grand.

I`d say your home address. If you were to put the BASE radio then that starts pushing down the employee route. There are loads of different factors which decide if your self employed or actually an employee (I don`t really know anything about your circumstances), but using the BASE radio as business address would generally point towards being an employee.

I`m not convinced there should have been somewhere to take off your personal allowance last time...... (unless you just mean for calculating your own tax, rather than putting on the actual return).
On the return you would definitely just put your total income and total expenditure.

Sorry, me being confusing there. Last time I didn`t need to as I was only self employed part time, and spent 4 days a week in my old job so that part had already been calculated for me.
The point is when I put in my total income and expenditure (without taking off the 5 grand cos at no point was I told to) then my tax to pay was much higher than it should have been - manually took the 5 grand off my total income and it was correct and verified as so by my accountant.
I`m sure there must have been lots of people given the wrong amount to pay and gone ahead and paid assuming it to be right because of this, especially those that aren`t very computer literate.
The question is, when everything else about the return online is described in quite explicit detail, why is this HUGE factor not mentioned to the end user??

The taxman`s got baby teeth compared to the VAT man !!
Pay an accountant, it`s far easier and they`ll usually always find you enough savings to justify the fee.

Not from 1 April.
Income and corporation tax inspectors new powers come into play for inspections and penalties. Basically they will be able to do current year tax inspections rather than having to wait until the return has been submitted.
Also just a note and this is from seminar we went to with PriceWaterhouseCooper, for any self employed people claiming business use of home.
To claim business use of home you have to have a dedicated office for business purposes. Now they will be able to insist on visiting this "business premises".
It`s highly unlikely they will use this right, unless it`s under the most severe circumstances, but they will have the right and the last thing anyone wants is the Revenue coming into their home!
