Page 1 of macrovision and the dvdr880

Hi, i`m not realy too sure how the copy protected system for dvd`s etc works, but I was just wondering. If I was to use the hack available to disable the region coding and macrovision on my Samsung 709, would I then be able to back-up dvd`s onto my dvdr880?

No you wouldn`t, as there is a different type of copy protection in force, called Copy Generation Management System (CGMS) which prevents digital-digital copying.

Is there any way around this problem ?

I have a DVDR880 and would also like to back up my DVD`s... Is it worthwhile buying another DVD player that would work with it or is the CGMS something inside the DVDR 880.
I`ve read one or two things re filter leads etc but would prefer to shell out on a DVD player that I could just hook up the recorder.

I don`t see why this wouldn`t work, despite what has been said. I have a YELO DVD800 standalone player which is multi region and macrovision disabled. I have successfully `backed up` several titles so far. I can`t get the remote hack for the recorder to work, but the YELO has a PAL60 mode, so I can even do Region 1 disks OK.

I have connected my 709 to the dvdr880 with a scart and this allows me to make back-ups with no problem at all so far. Used the remote hack for the 709. No probs so far from CGMS. Have even backed up region 1 discs!

Thanks everyone for replying, iv`e hacked and connected my 709 directly to the dvdr880 and it records other disks great.
I must say before buying the dvdr880 i had wondered what the quality of the recordings would be like, I expected graining, pixelating etc but it has been excelent so far and well worth the money.

Glad to hear u can back up your discs....I `ve tried about 20 discs and the only that I could back up was Black Hawk Down....all the others came up Copy Protected as soon as I hit the record button. I`ve tried using a Wharfedale M5 and a Pioneer 530.

Macrovision is an analogue copy protection system. DVD players have to be able to output an analogue signal to TVs because that`s all the majority of TVs can handle. Thus if the player outputs the signal with the macrovision embedded `flags` stripped out there is no reason why it can be recorded.

To the unsuccessful I say:

Is your DVD player hacked or chipped to turn macrovision off?

What sort of video signal are you outputting - composite video, s-video or rgb? Try composite video.

Try using the MAC MASTER video stabilser if you dont own a player capable of removing macrovision it costs about £35 i picked mine up at a computer fair in wolverhampton
