Which DVD Recorder Works!?

Metaphysical (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Tuesday, 22nd April 2003, 15:53

I have a Philips DVD R890 Recorder, but have been told that there are problems with all of these sets (an possible all other Philips DVD recorders). So now I am looking into another make.

Anyone had experience (good, bad or other!) with the Yamaha DRX-1 or Panasonic E-50?

If you really need more information on the Philips products look here

We had a 890 too and it lasted 4.5 months. Got a refund from Richer Sounds. We`re now going to wait for a few more months `til more recorders become available from other manufacturers. Frankly, with this, and our Philips WS TV now in the repair shop after four months also, I don`t think Philips will ever be getting my custom again.

I think you can say bad things about every manufacturer. I have had problems with everything, although my DVD890R is still going strong and I have had no probelms with it (touch wood), and hopefully I wont. I put a lot of money in to my home entertainment for different rooms in my house and hopefully they will all last. With technology moving as fast as it is repair shops are finding it harder to fix the electronics as the technology is moving at such a fast rate. Many of the big names like Sony, Philips, Thomson, Panasonic, etc are building more complex systems but with some high risks. Best to stay with a make you like and enjoy and form your own opinions around your friends and familys comments. The Internet is a good source but can be unreliable as people try to smear brands because of their tastes and not their true experiences.

Get yourself a Panasonic. Had mine about four months and it`s the dog`s twitcher. No problems with cheap media for it either it will record on anything. The DVD`s i`ve created playback on my sony, my daughters Acoustic solutions player, my other daughters PS2 and my Goodmans TV/DVD combi in the bedroom. I`ve got the E30 but i`ve also got Sky+. If i didn`t have Sky+ i would have seriously considered buying the Panasonic with the Hard drive. Hope this has helped.

I`m not saying "bad things" Didski - I`m simply stating what has happend and my experience. The fact remains that the failure rate of the Philips recorders are unacceptably high - this is backed-up by the comments made by the retailer I bought the 890 from - they`d had dozens of 880/90 units returned - all with the same problems. Multiply this x the number of main retailers - you get my point. Philips WS TV`s are also poor from a reliability standpoint and their overall CS is non-existant. It does however appear that Pansonic users have far less problems with their equipment.
We too have had many expensive CE units over the years - many of these are still in use today and have worked very reliably. I sincerely hope that your 890 continues to give you good reliable service.

I bought a Panasonic E50 a few weeks ago and its the dog`s watsit`s !
It was a toss up between the Phillips 880 or the Panasonic, but after reading about the problems with the Phillips on this and other forums
I went for the Panasonic. The dics seem to be cheaper and the DVD`s
that I have created have played back on Pioneer,Sony,Wharfedale,
Yelo,Harmon Kardon,Toshiba, so far! So anybody who is thinking about getting a recorder,Go for it,get a Panasonic! (NO I DON`T work for Panasonic just a very satisfied owner)

I puchased the Panasonic E50 about a fortnight ago from http://www.digital-point.co.uk for £348 it`s now £335. You get a free scart cable & if you order before 12 midday next day delivery. I use bulk paq 2 speed DVD-R discs & Maxell DVD-RAM disc`s for recordings. It`s an excellent machine & once finalised DVD-R discs will play on other DVD players. I particularly like the time-slip feature which allows you to watch one programme while recording another on the same DVD-RAM disc. Also the Quick view feature that lets you watch RAM recordings at 1.3 times normal speed. The cheapest DVD-RAM discs at £2.98 from
