Is 100Hz worth the extra money?
Hi, I`m after a 32 inch widescreen TV. Having 100Hz set looks to cost an extra £200. I am wondering if it is worth the extra money especially when watching DVD`s through Composite Video or S-Video.
I would also like to know what TV`s people recommend. So far, I have looked at the Sony Wega, and Panasonic Tau. I would like to hear opinions of the sets from people who have them...
Thanks,
Alex

This should probably be in the Hardware Forum. Anyway.....
100Hz is pretty much down to personal taste. Personally I don`t think it`s worth the extra money, and it doesn`t look to good to me with fast moving objects (e.g. sports programmes, which I watch quite a lot).
You should really watch 2 sets side by side with some example material (e.g. a football broadcast or a film) and see what you decide.
As for opinions of sets I have a Sony 32" and am very pleased with it. And I watch DVDs via RGB......

I own an older Sony 32" with 100Hz. I think that the comments about `fast moving objects` are correct - particularly if its moving from one side of the screen to another, eg something with horizontal credits. But, I really like the overall quality of the picture. Definitely check it out before you buy. If you`re going to spend that much the shop should let you try your own reference material on a variety of TVs.

Best thing to do is go down to your local showroom when a footbal match is on and ask if they can show you the football match on the TV you like, as that will put you off 100Hz

football for example is much nicer on my new 50hz TV than it was on any of my previous 3 100hz ones.
There`s a problem with the fast movement - ok the image is wonderfully stable, but too stable in places removing some image quality for certain types of program

I work in a shop which sells both Sony Wega and Panasonic Tau TV sets. In my opinion the Panasonic has the better tube (Quintrix), and I do agree that 100hz is not brilliant for watching fast-moving pictures. Loewe (a German make) also have fantastic pictures - better than both Panasonic and Sony.
Have a look at the Panasonic 32PF10 / 32PK1 / 32PK3. The 32PF10 has a 100hz flatscreen tube (16:9), and it is £1499, the 32PK1 has a 50hz flatscreen tube (16:9), at £819 (I think - don`t quote me on that), and the 32PK3 is the newer model of the 32PK1. It doesn`t offer anything over the 32PK1, except there is an extra 14:9 aspect ratio on it. Aesthetically it is no different.

"Is 100Hz worth the extra money?"
Yes, in my opinion.
It`s pointless on sets 28" and below, but if you`re going for 32" or above it`s worth looking at them
I`ve got a Panasonic 36PF10 which is 100Hz. It`s definitely better for most things. For sports coverage, there is a flicker reduction option. If you turn it off it compensates slightly and improves the fast motions (although it`s not as good as having a proper 50Hz mode)
As it`s already been said, it`s down to personal taste. As it happens, when we bought our telly, it was mainly its size that tempted us, but the 100Hz sets are much nicer to me.
